    Anti virus

    Hi all

Just a bit of advice really. Got a decent rig and just about to install Win 7 on it. I was wondering what advice you had on what PC security to get? Don't mind paying for it, or if there are just as good free ones out there, then that's fine too. I also don't mind if it is an all in one programme or if I have to download different applications, i.e anti virus, anti malware etc.

    Thanks for any advice!

However Avast and Avira seem like good free packages.

    Re: Anti virus

I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira AntirVir.

MSE seems to be very highly recommended by everyone, and I do use it on my laptop, but AntiVir has a proven track record of excellence in keeping me safe for many years and would be my pick.

My general steps for security are to use "immunize" from Spybot S&D, and also using something called Spyware Blaster. Both these protect you without needing to be continually running, by blocking elements in installed browsers. (I think thats how they work anyway!). I run "Super Anti-Spyware" scan every once in a while, but dont have it running in the background. AntiVir runs in the background and also scans often.

I was a fan of a third party firewall for XP+Vista, but the 7 firewall is a bit better, plus I have the router firewall as well, and its so nice for windows features such as Homegroup share, Remote Desktop etc just work without having to jump through hoops for third party firewalls. Also some of my prefered firewalls previously (Outpost, Online Armor) seemed to have trouble with W7 64bit.

Although it isnt necessarily kept 100% up to date I think this thread is a decent starting point for a blank system, but adapt the recommendations to your own needs and experiences, and remember its not completely up to date with W7 etc: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

malwarebytes is antimalware software that is run on damand so it doesnt interfere with other AV software it also gets rid of browser hijackers, popup generators and other stuff that AV misses

Oh nvm then - I thought they offered a real-time protection package that you were running alongside AVG.

    MalwareBytes isn't that advanced.

It's a manual scanning program for Malware, it works with everything.

I use Avira Anti-Virus - It's free and better than most programs I've used in the past, including Kaspersky.

    Thanks very much all.

Think I'll go for MSE. Seems to be quite highly thought of, here and elsewhere. Pretty handy it being free to boot!
    Cheers!

    Re: Anti virus

I use Avira Antivir - find its best again crypted/obfuscated malware. Also from my experience it also has one of the most difficult heuristics engines to bypass.

    Remember nothing beats common sense.

I use avast personally. It's free and has a low footprint. MSE is also good, and have used on a few computers in the past.
