    weird phone fault

Sorry if this is'nt the right place for this post but I have problem with my home phone. If I connect my phone to my master socket using my triple adapter, which incidentally I have been using for a couple of years I have no dialling tone on my phone. If I connect it directly everything is fine.My broadband works fine when I use the adapter but I did buy a new one thinking it must be the triple adapter but I still have the problem.Anyone have any ideas. Thanks Maljay.

    Re: weird phone fault

Is it 'just an adaptor' or does it have an ADSL filter in it? If the latter, I would suspect that one of the internal filter components has failed. The filter is on the phone cct.

    Re: weird phone fault

Sounds like your adapter is faulty, most likely a short between wire 3 and either wires 2 or 5.

If we where talking about a long cable run that would be hard to replace, then there are methods to work around such faults, and fault finding guides to tell you exactly what fault you have, but seeing as this is a cheap and easy to replace adapter, then you should just bin it, and get another.

The reason your ADSL modem is un-affected is because it only uses wires 2 and 5, and not wire 3.

While I agree that the adaptor (or filter) is likely to be faulty, the above is not strictly accurate. Both the ADSL and phone signal arrive on a two wire pair, which is connected to pins 2 and 5. Pin 3 is the bell wire, only required for legacy telephones with a low impedance ringer, and is generated by the master socket where the phone line comes into your house. In 99% of cases, the bell wire can be disconnected without any problem.

ADSL neither uses nor requires the bell wire; neither do modern telephones. The bell signal, or ringing tone, is extracted from the incoming twin pair buy a capacitor, and if that failed it is unlikely to make any difference, unless you have a very old (more than 10 years) telephone. New telephones just don't use wire 3.

However, I agree that the adaptor/filter is likely to be the culprit. It is also worth getting a good quality (BT approved) filter for your broadband. It will be around £6.00 which is not much compared with the overall cost of your broadband service charge.
