Exclamation New Phone - The best around?

    Ahoy!

I currently have a HTC Hero, which I am very impressed with, however im hardly a phone power user. Except for Web Browsing, Texting, the odd call here and there, MP3/Radio usage, and now the want of a camera, im not too concerned about any other features (not that there are many more ) I do love gadgets though, so im hardly going to complain if it has bags of features

My girlfriend loves the HTC hero and as her iPhone 2G is packing up, i've decided to give it to her and get myself a new phone. With me wanting a useable camera, the Hero's is really dreadful and is pointless to have almost :/

Before the Hero I had an iPhone 3G 16GB, and I do like the iPhone, even though its not hugely customisable, I dont think it really needs to be due to the fact it does its job very well, and is a smooth device to use!

I have shortlisted a few phones but this is in no way definitive, and I have a few questions for each of them, and any opinions/answers in here would be really great

Nokia N900 - I've noticed the best contract deal for this is Mobile Phones Direct and I can have it delivered next day, which is all fine. I've read alot of mixed things about this phone but I hear that its improving weekly and is starting to realise its potential, so its certainly a phone I am interested in! Anyone think this is the best of the bunch, or given my above requirements, think its pointless to get?

Sony Satio - I had a brief look at these when I got the Hero, they seem a very nice phone and the only reason I was put off this phone was the fact I didnt really need a good camera and thought the Hero's would suffice, which it doesnt! How good is the software and such on these, are you folks impressed with it? Im assuming the camera is superb? Will be having a good read of the Satio thread shortly!

Motorola Droid/Milestone - Looks an interesting phone but I dont know much about it, heard the camera wasnt great which is a little sad, but others may say otherwise! Anyone have one and think its in the running with the above phones?

iPhone 3GS 32GB - I do like the iPhone and its new camera improvements certainly put it back into my choices for a new phone, anything else worth a mention or is it just the improved storage and better camera, everything else similair?

HTC HD2 - I know this is a windows phone, how does it compare to the Hero? Another awful camera? Anything else worth a mention?

    ----------------------------

I have to say after a bit of research I am leaning well towards the N900, it just seems different, and in a good way, its few flaws are being fixed and will be sorted with a firmware update (confirmed by Nokia), as well as more functionality in portrait mode too.
Looking at UK based deals, I've only managed to find it available on Vodafone contracts, which is fine, via Mobilephonesdirect (MPD) and mobiles.co.uk - both claim to have it in stock and so on.

Has anyone ordered an N900, if so, where from, and are you delighted with it?

Thanks for reading my long post, if there are any other phones that I have overlooked and might be good for me, please suggest them!

Im not a fanboy by any means and just want what would suit me best. Any of your input is hugely appreciated and I thank you in advance for any replies.

    Cheers

I've got the Hero too, and I think you would be disappointed by the Windows Mobile Touch HD2 (not a patch on Android)

I feel the iPhone is not as good as the Hero for text entry (the trackball is really useful for correcting mistakes). Its price may also be an issue, depending on circumstances.

TBH, I would go with one of the first three. I know it's not much to go on, but the Android ones are getting better and better, although it may not be as good as the N900 -not had a shot of one yet ;(
I'm not sure about it now, but I heard about a recall on it. Don't think I can post links yet, but google 'satio recall' and take the 1st result to see a 'horror story' about it.

Not sure about the milestone/droid, so maybe the N900?

Obviously personal preference, but just my 2p.

Re: New Phone - The best around?

I have spent the last couple of days having a good look around online and I've decied to go with the N900. Its main drawbacks are easily fixable and the very few things/tweaks that is requires are pretty much all confirmed in software updates.

Its also a far better price than the iPhone for example, what some places are charging for that is absolute madness (the 32GB 3GS).
