First time overclock 2-3 possible problems

Hi all I am new to overclocking but after a few months researching i decided to give it a go.

    I have an e8600
    asus maximus formula II
    4gb DDR2 800 5-5-5-15
    Artic Freezer 7 cpu fan

well first of all i overclocked my cpu from 3.33ghz up to 3.66ghz with no problems and tested stability for 8 hours with prime and everything was fine.

My next step was to 4.0ghz which is where i want to be 24/7.

All in all the overclock seems to have gone great but there are a couple of things that i am a bit worried about,

First one is when i turn on my PC it shuts down after 1 second then boots up after 2 seconds then continues to run fine (please note this only happens if I haven't had my PC on for a while)

Second my cpu:ram ration is 1:1 but in the bios I changed my FSB to 400 but my ram is showing 801? should i be worried about this or is it just a rounding thing to ignore?

Third of all when i put cpu under full load in prime95 my core 0/1 temps are hitting about 66C max but my cpu is less than 60C max, now i heard people say anything under 72C is fine do they mean the cpu or the core temps?

Sorry for the extremely newbie questions but any help would be much appreciated

    Many thanks

Re: First time overclock 2-3 possible problems

There doesn't seem to be any problems at all really, what you describe as the pc shutting down after 1 second and then rebooting fine is known as a cold boot. I'm not too sure how it occurs but it's "normal" to say.

Your RAM "speed" will be twice the "frequency" it's set at, i.e. if FSB = 200 and your CPU:RAM ratio is 1:2, RAM frequency would be 400mhz but the RAM speed would be 800mhz. The extra 1mhz is just a sort of rounding error so it should be fine.

66C is kind of hot but in this temperature that's not too surprising, that's actually really good. It'd be about 50C in winter which is not bad at all for an Arctic Freezer 7. If you're worried about temperatures then get a 120mm fan tower cooler.

What are the voltages for the CPU though? It should be under ~1.40V IIRC for the 45nm Wolfdales.

    Thanks for you reply,

I will do some looking into cold boot but it is great if it isn't anything to worry about.

The only voltage I changed was CPU Voltage (Vcore) which is 1.2 (stock) from auto, all other voltages are left on auto. Pretty amazed that i got 0.66ghz from stock voltage going to do 12 hour P95 when i sleep tonight but have ran a few games and benchmarks and 3 hours of Large FFT with no errors so far.

Re: First time overclock 2-3 possible problems

I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with a cold boot, I've experienced it myself with certain motherboards.

If it's 1.2V with all other voltages then it sounds great and 4ghz is enough of an overclock for most games.

All in all, no problems that I can see and it sounds great.

I'd also say thats a cold-boot, i get these from time to time. As far as im concerned as long as it runs properly after you shouldn't have too much to worry about.

That temps fine if its 100% stressed for some time. Enjoy 4ghz.

Re: First time overclock 2-3 possible problems

    Thanks guys,

well 8 hours of small fft produced no errors but twice I have turned my PC on and windows didnt boot but booted second attempt with no problems,

do you think i should either lower the OC or up the vcore from stock 1.2v

    many thanks
