Exclamation Help needed with upgraded system :(

I've just finished upgrading my motherboard/CPU/RAM but when I try to boot the system displays the Gigabyte logo screen then reboots in an endless cycle. I noticed when I was assembling the system that the northbridge heatsink felt very loose, moving about with very little effort - I was thinking the NB might be overheating but surely the heat output isn't high enough to overheat it within a few seconds? Any ideas what I should try?

Edit: It only seems to start the reboot cycle if I press Del to enter BIOS setup, if I press nothing the system hangs at that logo screen.

Whats the mobo and other parts? Sound like a power issue to me. Same thing happened on my old AthlonXP.

EDIT; just put 2 and 2 together; your bios version supports your new CPU?

Yeah the CPU is on the motherboard's supported list. I've just managed to make it into BIOS setup once somehow, but after changing a few settings and rebooting it's just hanging/rebooting again...

I have the AM2+ version of the board and the HS on the NB is always a bit flimsy. The chip is very narrow but as long the HS is in its 'relaxed position' it should be fine.

Re: Help needed with upgraded system :(

Ah ok thanks. I've just tried with 1 stick of RAM at a time and got the same problem, I also checked PSU voltages and they are all well within spec so it looks like it's the motherboard. Unfortunately I don't have any other DDR3 or AM3 systems so I can't swap out components to test but I know the system was working perfectly well with the Core 2 Duo setup. I've also tried with just power, keyboard and VGA connected with all HDDs and ODDs disconnected, same problem. It seems to make it further sometimes and sometimes it doesn't even display anything on the screen before resetting.

OK I'm pretty certain the motherboard is duff so I've requested an RMA. Thanks for your help!

while it may be on the list it may not be supported by the current BIOS, do you know the board revision and the bios version ?

Revision 1, BIOS F1 but there's nothing I can do about it - I can't get past the POST screen to boot a flash drive/run the built-in flash utility.

Re: Help needed with upgraded system :(

you may get charged for a RMA as there will be nothing wrong with the board, in reality you should have been sold a rev 1.4 as thats the latest model and has a BIOS that will work.

i would contact said company and see if you need to use the 7 day DSR instead of RMA before you get charged for it.

Re: Help needed with upgraded system :(

It's not fit for purpose either way but I did double-check my CPU was compatible and I can't see 'added x CPU support' on any of the BIOS revisions. Thanks for the advice though, I'll be careful.

Re: Help needed with upgraded system :(

Support for the Hex cores was added in bios version F4 for that board, so your 3 versions out of date lol.

Re: Help needed with upgraded system :(

I couldn't find anything about that on the Gigabyte website or Scan and like I said there's nothing I can do about it since you need a working system in order to flash the BIOS and I have no other AM3 CPUs. I'll mention it to the returns people and see what they say.

Re: Help needed with upgraded system :(

In my experience a CPU that needs a bios update for "support" will usually still boot, but will just be misrecognised and have features disabled and the wrong clock speed or something. Perhaps this is not the case with newer designs.

The only thing I would say is in the past when I have had a duff motherboard, I have been unable to get any response at all (ie not even Gigabyte logo showing)

Its still the case, do you have on board graphics? is so try taking out the card and run it on the IGC or a less card.
