problems with drivers for updating Dell laptop to windows 7

updated my laptop to windows 7, only I can't get Dell Quickset to work, or cyberlink powerDVD to play discs. Also I've lost the scroll bar functionality of the ALPS trackpad.

Is there anyone with working windows 7 versions for these software who can give me some pointers - even just their model numbers so I can see if the Dell drivers for their machines work on mine.

(I've tried running things in compatibility mode, but still no use)

    Thanks.

Have you tried to check the drivers on Dell's website? you only need the model number and you can get to the drivers...

If there are no win7 drivers, then you can use the Vista drivers, 99% of the time it's compatible...

Re: problems with drivers for updating Dell laptop to windows 7

despite having spent a hefty chunk on a high-end laptop a few years ago, Dell, in their wisdom deem my machine unable to run anything beyond XP and hence offer no drivers for it. Believe me I've tried scouring their website. I imagine they think I'll buy one of their newer, inferior machines, none of which offer the same screen resolution mine has unless i spend £3k on a LED gimmicky alienware spaceship. Not likely.

Contrary to Dell's opinion, I have successfully installed windows 7, audio drivers, video drivers, and the like. It runs stuff fine. What I'm trying to find is their quickset app and ALPS trackpad driver plus an update to cyberlink that runs with windows 7. None are essential to running windows 7 but I've lost some of the functionality I used to have, like nice little graphics bars when I change brightness/volume, and the scroll bars on the trackpad are no longer recognised.

Your best bet would be to ask at the Dell section of notebookreview forum as there is always people asking for various drivers and often people find drivers from other models that are cross compatible.

This is the best place to start your search. I installed 7 on my XPS M1330 few months ago, installed all drivers and it works a treat.

Re: problems with drivers for updating Dell laptop to windows 7

I recently installed Win7 on a Dell Latitude laptop, fairly new model for which Win7 drivers were availbale but have and am still having issues with the onboard network driver. Everything else is working just fine including the wireless but no matter how I try installing the provided network drivers from Dell I still have not managed to get this working as yet.
May be worth waiting for a newer driver?

I'd bet good money that Quickset is not very model specific, find the closest laptop which supplies a 7 version and try to install it. What model number do you have btw?

    Likewise the ALPS driver...

Cyberlink may be more of a problem though, but why do you need it? Windows 7 plays DVDs natively in WMC.

Re: problems with drivers for updating Dell laptop to windows 7

    Spec is

Inspiron 9300 - prob 4 years old now, but it was spec'd out to the max when I bought it and it's still competing well now. Cane my mate on his Alienware M11x using it.

    1.86GHz Pentium M
    100GB 7200 Hitachi Travelstar PATA
    1900x1200 WXGA LCD screen
    2GB RAM
all the other usuals, 100MB RJ45 LAN, Wireless B/G etc.
    NEC 8x +/- DVD R/W

always liked the interface of the cyberlink DVD, plus it let me skip those annoying piracy ads - always a pleasure when watching box-sets.

I agree, Quickset is almost certainly not model specific - they use blanket versions across several models. Only problem is Dell add something to the installer files to do a check on manufacturer (not a problem) windows version (ok if win7) and model number (problem). The model number check returns not a suitable model and closes the installation. I've tried looking into the msi file but can't find the parameter to change. I can either find versions that will run but not for windows 7 or versions for windows 7 that don't like my model number. Need to learn how to edit .msi files maybe?

    Anyone got any pointers?
