Just checking, was Windows 7 installed freshly on this new motherboard? Is it every USB port, front and back?

Are there any yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager?

Sounds like you are missing some drivers for your USB chipset

    Re: 785gtm-e45 usb problem

OK, does a USB keyboard work in the BIOS (assuming any necessary options are turned on in the BIOS to allow it)? This should show whether it's software or hardware.

Do you have any USB powered items (phone charger etc) where it will be really obvious if the USB socket's not giving out enough power for them? If there's anything strange happening with the power devices may only be partially identified.

Just to make things simpler, only have one USB device plugged in at a time while testing. I know USB specifies a certain amount of protection for the power lines, but maybe one if device is faulty it could affect all of them.

    Re: 785gtm-e45 usb problem

I had an issue once a few years ago where plugging anything into the USB headers on the motherboard caused the USB ports to complain, so why not just try unplugging the front USB for now.

I never actually came up with a solution to this (I supplied my client with apologies and a free 4-port USB hub, they didn't complain ): I assume it's an RMA situation if that's what turns out to be the problem, I'm afraid...

    Re: 785gtm-e45 usb problem

ive tried all of the suggestions i dont have any usb phone charger, would a 4 usb root hub work then if i buy one?

keyboard doesnt work in bios even when all bios is set to all defaults and selected correct lt i think it may be a hardware issue with the usbs

i cant understand why the front usbs dont work though as theyre connected to a different set of jumpers than the one built into the motherboard this makes me wonder whether a hub would be of any use aswell

would aUSB 2 Hi-Speed 4 Port PCI Expansion Card/Internal Hub work is what i meant

    Re: 785gtm-e45 usb problem

The suggestion to unplug the front panel is because the front and back ports may be electrically connected. If there was a problem with the case ports (like shorted wires) it could affect all ports. Try that, and if it doesn't help, a pci usb adapter card should work and would be cheap.
I'm a bit concerned that if usb really is faulty, there might be other things affected.

    Re: 785gtm-e45 usb problem

450W is enough to power your system several times over.

That's assuming your power supply really is doing 450W, which I doubt at £21 including case. Plus it's probably an older design that's heavy on the 5V and light on 12V. It may even be that the power supply is not giving a clean enough 5V supply for the motherboard USB to work with.

But assuming that the system's got enough power now, a pci USB card will add ~5W consumption at maximum, so it should still be plenty.

    Re: 785gtm-e45 usb problem

Do you have access to any other PC to try swapping parts around? I'm most concerned about the power supply being rubbish, so if you are able, it would be good to try swapping it for a different one. Or if you have a multimeter around you could check that it really is 5V coming out of the USB ports. 5V isn't used in a lot of places in a PC these days, but USB and PCI are two of them.
