    Rubbish Performance in Games

Getting really fed up with rubbish performance in games... just wondering whether this is normal or not.

I'm running games on my main rig, so Q9550, 8GB RAM, 5870. No overheating problems that I'm aware of. So technically, gaming performance should be pretty good.

Playing Fallout New Vegas today though, at 1920x1080, and performance seems pretty poor. I've put it down to zero AA, zero AF, v-sync disabled, everything at medium, except all view distances at maximum and all shadows disabled. Result? 30fps at times.

Oblivion is the same story - knock all the settings down fairly low, but still struggling to hit a solid 60fps. Surely I should be doing a lot better than that?

Just upgraded to 10.10, but it hasn't changed anything in Fallout.

Have you run GPU-Z?? I would make sure that the HD5870 is not stuck in 2D clocks.

That would seem the obvious thing to check, or even just in CCC check that the clocks get bumped when you're gaming (in case you unlocked Overdrive and set silly low speeds manually )

Wish I could blame my rubbish performance in games on the hardware though - was playing L4D2 last night with some friends and I was shocking

Yup, 850MHz in-game, dropping to 157MHz on desktop. Hit 61 degrees during play as well, up from 41 at desktop.

I would check the PCI-E speed too and also only try 4GB of RAM.

    Re: Rubbish Performance in Games

The fps performance with Fallout new vegas running new tech is a known issue.

There has been a file released that increases performance by a good margin. I`m using the file myslef and it works great, game crashed after the intro movie before hand. The file doens`t like xfire though, so if you use it, exit before playing.

    Re: Rubbish Performance in Games

There were known issues with win 7 from fallout 3, I run fallout 3 as administrator and this seems to help for some reason, no crashing, I believe vegas and 3 use the same engine might be worth a try, cant believe I had to install the the 2nd disc in safe mode from the GOTY edition of fallout3

I'm assuming this happens in all of your games or is it only on new vegas?

    Re: Rubbish Performance in Games

Well, Oblivion performed appallingly badly so it's not just one game. Having said that, they are built on the same engine, so it could be a recurrent issue. I've not read about anything though - Oblivion should be running well these days

On the flipside, you're right... Napoleon Total War and Mafia II have both been run recently on my PC without any hitches. Maybe it is something engine specific, perhaps even the 8GB of RAM.

    Re: Rubbish Performance in Games

I'm not at my desktop PC right now so I can't check to make sure I'm talking about the right stuff, but what type of AA is Catalyst Control Centre set to? I went from a 4770 to a 5850 and Borderlands went from a steady ~60fps on max with the 4770 to 30fps with regular dips unless I turned the settings down. I had AF and AA turned off, but it turned out Catalyst Control Centre had a setting for something like super aliasing. There was a drop box with "Box 2x 4x" etc, and it was on 24x. Driver updates did not change it.

Sorry I can't be specific, but look through the CCC menus for a section saying something like "Box filtering 2x".
