    Motherboard Bios Question

I saw this video of how to flash your bios through Q Flash. This person had a gigabyte motherboard. Before he updated the bios he pressed 'load optimized defaults'. Why did he do this? Why didn't he press 'load fail-safe defaults'? Whats the difference between them?

Also, after he updated his bios successfully, he went into the bios and pressed 'load optimized defaults'. Why did he do this?

Another question I have is, after he updated his bios, he went and changed settings to do with the RAM. He first changed the setting System Memory Multiplier (SPD) from 'Auto' to '12'. Underneath this, the 'Memory Frequency Mhz' changed from '1333' to '1600'. What does this do? The reason I'm asking is that I built my own computer and I had a thought that maybe this gives you better performance.

He also changed DRAM Selectable (SPD) from 'auto' to 'quick'. Again what does this do?

Thanks in advance for your replies!!!

    Re: Motherboard Bios Question

Load optimised defaults is Gigabytes recommended/out of the factory settings. Failsafe is low voltage/low speed, and actually might be less stable than optimised defaults.

The second question is due to the fact that 1600 DDR RAM speed isn't a standard supported speed, so isn't automatically picked up unless you have special RAM called XMP. Without XMP you just change the speeds manually to make it run at 1600 rather than 1333.

There's no real world advantage, but if you've got RAM that runs at 1600 then there's no harm running it at 1600

Quick SPD means that you can set the RAM speeds/timing yourself, rather than leaving them to be automatically picked up.
