AMD dual core cpus and motherboard BIOS

I'm thinking of building a PC based on a AMD dual core cpu. I've read that you have flash the BIOS of the motherboard to enable X2 support. Is this only necessary if you are replacing a single core cpu in an existing motherboard, or does it have to be done when you put a dual core cpu in a new motherboard? If so, how is it done?

    TIA

it will depend on what board & how old your existing BIOS is e.g. my AN8 Ultra will run a X2 on BIOS 13 but only as a single core whereas from BIOS 15 it enables the 2nd core.

as for flashing again it depends exacly on your board but either from a floppy loaded with a BIOS file & a flash utility or most modern mobos now have a utility to flash in Windows.
