    Fax Modem for SBS 2003

Hi, got a HP ProLiant server (prob. not relevant) and need a fax modem (only want for fax usage). But when looking at the hardware compatibilty list from MS, the modems are not available to buy. I am desperate to get one a.s.a.p. and want to know if anyone can point me in the direction of a good fax/modem.

I see there are some on ebay but code is BCM94212/I, whereas on the MS website, the code is BCM4212. Anyone know if this is the same device?

Any external serial USR modem will work.
Avoid internal cards or USB ones as they are generally flaky or (in the case of the internal card) require a reboot to get working again should they decide to stop working.

I went through 3 USRobotic external modems. Replaced 3 years ago with a Sitecom V90 (£24 Amazon + del). No probs. Mind you, very little fax traffic these days.

I'm not sure if SBS supports the brooktrout fax boards but if Faxing is important to you then thats what you need

The Brook Trout cards are indeed the nuts, but they're officially unsupported for SBS (and I've read some horror stories of people struggling to get them to work with it too, so probably best to steer clear)

Re: Fax Modem for SBS 2003

I got the USRobotics USR015630G and installed it. Had a problem initially with SBS2003 thinking it was a mousepad. So had to ring USR support and go through manually assigning the hardware in order to upgrade the firmware and then re-install correctly. Bit of a pain to be honest but all working now. But a 10 minute job turned into nearly 2 hours which is not too good when you are doing things fixed price.

fair point the SBS compatability list is a bit odd at times. I recall ( and its going back a fair few years ) using something like GFI Faxmaker with the brooktrout kit and it was pretty smooth. This was for a system that had to fax server hundred faxes in an overnight batch process.
