    Ext Hard Drive help Please???...

    Hi,
Can anybody help me with this, i have looked on the internet but having trouble finding the relevent information to help.
I have a Buffalo ext Hard drive hd-ce1.0tu2-eu (inside it is a Samsung HD103uJ)
It has stopped showing up on the computer, i have tried it in others too, redownloaded the software/ drivers etc and still nothing, it only has photos on it but would really love to get them back.. I think it is just the connections/ circuit board that has stopped working as it is still making all the same noises.
I am wondering if the following would work?

1.. buy a replacement the same and swap the circuit boards (but would they be the same connections?)
2.. Could i put the hard drive bit inside the computer somehow, i have a spare slot at the front for an extra drive, but could this work? or do i need special connections, which i could get.
3.. Is there any other way i could connect this to my computer or laptop via any other leads etc??

I am will ing to give anything ago

Thanks for reading this and i hope you can help
    Thanks
    Debbie

Cannot say specifically as I am not familiar with that particular piece of hardware but it is reasonable to assume that you would be able to take out the drive and connect it to your PC.

If capacity exists then with the appropriate cable you could connect internally or if not use a drive caddy to effectively replace the existing Buffalo shell (I think this would be better anyway).

See if it looks like you can remove the HDD from the caddy easily. If it does then I'd do that and connect it inside the PC.

Not sure if it's going to be an IDE or Sata drive, probably Sata, if so the spare bay you have for hte drive probably has a spare sata connection waiting to take it, so you'll not need any leads.

See if you can see the drive after boot, if so sorted, if not perhaps you could use recovery software... I had a similar situation just last week - I posted my results last night in this same section of the forum - look a couple of posts below

Just in case. There were a number of data recovery links in this thread.

Re: Ext Hard Drive help Please???...

Thanks for your replies, they have helped me alot..
I tried putting the hard drive in the pc internally, fitted great, but it didnt show up when started.
I went to maplins and brought a sata hard drive docking station, which the hard drive just slots in and is connected to the pc via a usb lead. but it still won't show in my computer or disc management.
I did a recovery scan but because the drive isn't visable it doesn't even try to get any files from it.
Is there any way i can search for the hard drive somehow via the pc, or do you have any other suggestions? or can you recommend any downloads that would help me?
    Thanks very much

    Erm other suggestions...

    1. Download a Linux Live CD (perhaps Knoppix or Ubuntu Rescue or something) and boot with this - see if the different OS recognises the drive.

    2. Get an actual sata cable, not a caddy, its possible the USB side of things is confusing matters, with mobo - hdd via the one cable it can't get any more simple - you're eliminating other factors

    3. Try it in another PC or Laptop?
