    Help with laptop random shutoff

Long story short, it's a HP pavilion DV6, the amd version, specs as follows,

    2.1ghz amd athlon X2 (QL-65)
    350gb hdd
    ATI radeon 4530
    4gb ram
    Windows 7 32Bit

Now the battery is not the orignal for the laptop, it is a larger one i bought to compensate the game's i play on the laptop (nothing to major SF4 and DMC4 some FF8 so pretty old games now.)

These games do not really stress the laptop to much and clearence is given so the laptop has decent airflow under it (raised due to different battery)

Today for the first time ever the laptop just randomly shut off....wouldnt switch back on even after i removed the battery and placed it back in, the damn thing still wouldn't switch back on! I was playing DMC4 at the time.

I pluged the charger in and pressed the power button, it switched on with no problems, i removed the charger and it stated it had 48% battery life left....there was no error message and the laptop booted up as if it was booting from a cold boot....Does this mean the battery is on its way out? thanks!

That sounds like the battery mate. I have the DV6 Intel version but I have the stock battery in it. Plays things like FarCry 2 and BBC2 no worries at all. Only downside is that it gets REALLY hot when it is getting stressed.

If gaming I would personally say, pull the battery and just run it off the mains. Also make sure your power management is set to maximum performance when on mains. Do the same in the ATI control panel.

Could be the battery isn't giving out the required voltage. Is it a genuine battery or a knock off?

Thanks, the odd thing is the laptop battery is now working again....i normally do run it off the mains but the off chance today i didn't (whats the odds eh?) i might just put it in the same scenaro again to see if it does it again, to be fair it wasnt that hot as i'd only been playing for what 5 mins? so heat was not the issue this time, i'm going to assume it is the end of my battery's life

I wouldn't say it is a knock off, but it is not the Genuine battery, that died a while back

Do the HP ones have a battery calibration in the BIOS?
Might be worth running that if you think the battery is at fault..
