    PC won't fire up!!

System: NF7-S with barton Athlon, Antec PSU, Maxtor HDD.

Has my venerable nforce gaming rig of yesteryear finally given up the ghost?

The red light on the motherboard is lit, indicating it is recieving power, but it refuses to fire up! Here's what I have tried so far:

Yes, I have tried a different PSU

Yes, I have reset the bios (and replaced the battery)

Yes, I have carefully cleaned all the dust from every nook and cranny

Yes, I have disconnected every non essential component

Yes, I have used harsh language

Does anyone have any brilliant ideas? I'm thinking the motherboard has finally baked out, but if you know different please post here...

Nop, it would still attempt to boot and report a fail. Let me define 'not firing up' sorry; when the 'power on' button is depressed nothing happens. I have tried bypassing the switch and that didn't work either!

It's as if the PSU had failed, but I have tried a different one so can rule that out.

Have you tried reseating the motherboard and/or cpu.

Put the card o-rings before securing the motherboard onto the brass standoffs?

Have you plugged in all plugs associated with the CPU - ie the additional 4, 6 or 8 pin plug, not sure if its on the old Socket A motherboards.

how did you manage to use this system for such a long time?

no offence, but I wonder what can you do with it nowadays?

I've used a 3ghz pentium 4 some time ago and it made me so angry with it's slowness I've almost attacked it with a hammer

That is a very good question.

Hundreds of years ago (2004) we had a thread going to build a capable gaming rig for minimal outlay. This was a huge thread and ran for weeks if not months. Folllowing that thread, many of us followed Agent's advice and went for the NF7-S solution.

7 years later I have a dead gaming rig, I only play Warcraft and despite the new 'Cata' expansion I was still getting nearly 40 fps. 7 years of gaming from a budget rig, what sort of recommendation was that Agent?

    Somebody sack him lol

A new replacement should not cost too much even now:

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...ers-guide.html

If you are only playing WoW the build can be even cheaper!

    Re: PC won't fire up!!

Good news everyone! I managed to get it to fire up!

I gave the case a good kicking and tried one last time the power on button before I strip it and landfill, I couldn't believe it was actually powering up, thought I was seeing things!

I have no idea what happened, but I AM NEVER switching it off again haha!! I have disconnected the on/off button, so nobody can thoughtfully turn it off for me :-)

I'm taking this as a warning of impending doom tho, so will be starting the process of sourcing components for a new build. Time to start a 'build me a gaming rig for £100' thread teehee!

Thank you all once again for your helpful comments.

Ah, the low-tech, cheaper version of 'hammer, fine adjusting'

Glad to hear it turned out well

Been there, but in my case I'm pleading manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to temporary insanity ...

Well, I was pretty mad at it - enough to give it a helping hand (foot) down the stairs, anyway.

'tis the only time I haven't been able to salvage something from the wreckage.
