    New Build Locking up! -Help

Hey guys I really need some help!

Right for some reason my computer seems to crash/lock up every now and then. Its normally while I'm playing games, most recently Magicka is the culprit.

They were mainly Bsods so last night I decided to format windows on my SSD and start from scratch. All went well and got all the driver and stuff sorted. Loaded up Steam started Magicka and after 30-40mins of playing bam screen locks up and sound starts stuturing out.

I've flashed to latest Bios and as far as I know all drivers are up to date. Iam overclocking the CPU but its a modest OC with a Corsair H50 Water cooler on the CPU.

Prime95 seems to be stable left running over night with max temps reaching about 65-67c. They have never gone over that.

    System specs are:
    I5 2500k running at 4.5ghz
    Asus P8P67 Pro
    4GB Geil 1600 Ram
    Palit 570GTX @ Stock
    Corsair H50 CPU Cooler
    Coolermaster GX 750w PSU
    OCZ Vertex SSD

Its really getting me down as the system cost a fortune and I just want it to run properly.

Dial down the overclock, just because its stable in prime 95 doesn't mean its stable period.

Intelburntest is far more powerful then prime 95, if you pc is stable under that it should be stable under all conditions, seriously watch your temps when using it though.

I agree, the overclock could be a bit high. Apparently around 50% of 2500K's are stable at 4.5GHz.
Do you an error message (would be shown in capital letters with underscores instead of spaces) when the BSOD happens? You could trying going down to 4.2GHz and seeing if that works.. a friend of mine solved the same problem by doing that.

    Almost certainly your overclock.
    - 4.5ghz is high with that PSU (Suprised for a high end rig you chose that PSU tbh)
    - The RAM timings may be wrong
    - It may not be coping with the heat

For the sake of the OP's rig, that's a pretty poor suggestion.

    Read and digest this....

    http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1578110

    I'm @ 4.705 Ghz (46x102.3) @ 1.4v Vocre. Folding 24/7 stable. Got there using the link.

Pay attention to the BSOD codes. Basically 101 or 124 indicate lack of Vcore. I've not had any others on either of my 2 Sanybridge boards.

The temps are fine as you say, so watercooling is a less than helpful remark. You don;t need to watercool these chips to get the best out of them, unless you are looking at 5+Ghz. I was at an overclocking competition and we were benching using the CustomPC benchmark at 5.28ghz on a Thermaltake Frio @1.55Vcore and that only hit 70C, so the temps not holding you back.

You may be suffering (v)droop - so set the board up as described in the link and keep watching those BSOD's. I was stable for 6 days at a time folding 24/7 on 1.36 volts, it took moving up to 1.4 to prevent that crashing after 6 days. It's damned weird and frustrating, but stick with it, and keep a log of what you do and how long it lasts, and what the BSOD code.

    Enjoy!

And regarding the PSU, check what the 3.3v, 12v and 5v values are when under load using CPU-Z. They shouldn't be varying too much from those values. It's unlikely that you're stressing your PSU so much that it's not giving you a clean voltage, but it's a possibility. While not the best, the coolermaster 750W is a more than adequate model, only bettered by the elite (Corsair, BeQuiet, Seasonic etc) models.

    Just for the record:
    1. CPU-Z is not a reliable way to test rails.Use a multi-meter.
    2. Stressing a PSU does not determine if you get clean voltage. The performance of transfer of power from the wall to the PC does
    3. I didnt say the Coolermaster was inadequate. I did say though that for a rig of that value, he/she couldve done better for the same cost. BTW.....the BeQuiet units are pretty average aswell, and i would take SEASONIC or ENERMAX over the Corsair units all day long.

Regarding CPU-Z, I was just indicating where to check. Absolutely use a voltmeter, but if CPU-Z shows that the reading is near as damned it 3.3, 5 or 12 volts,a nd not TOO far away, then chances are that this is not the cause of the locking up. If you use HWMonitor whicle doing the overclock, the VCore will vary depending on how goo the motherboards power management circuits are. Mine folds 24/7 so the voltage when under this extreme load vaires from the 1.4v I've set - from 1.37 to 1.41v. That's the board compensating to the change in load. Other values will vary too depending on the load on that rail, ie the AVCC vaies from 3.28 to 3.31. If the values are varying much from this, then you can see that there are larger fluctuatiuons than mine, which is 24 FOLDING stable, which I've found to be as good a measure as Prime Stable over a 24 hour period.

I don't believe that Taranatar's issue is related to the power supply, CPU-Z is merely a way to help identify the possible source. The BSOD code is the most useful piece of information, followed by the operating voltages. How you get them is up to you. Sitting over a rig with a voltmeter for a 24 hour test run isn't particulalry practical... Easier to log the voltages in the OS using CPUZ/HWMonitor...
