    Dead drive after Dban?

    Hi all.

Acer Laptop, dual core and "Gb. 160 b drive.

I used Dban eraser to clean a drive and now it appears dead. Have run @Active boot disk and it reports some bad sectors. Win 7 will not load past a very early screen, just freezes.

My knowledge is low on drives really so I was wondering is it dead? Or have I erased MBR's or something else important. The fact that the boot disk does not 'see' the drive in any app makes me think it is toast though, having seen the bad sector report when scanning the drive. Before I invest in another laptop drive I just wanted to be sure and not missing something important I don't know about.

Have looked at Dban and other sites to get an answer but no joy. The joys of how drives file is soooo dry lol.

Have you checked in windows disk management to see if it needs initialising

No actually. I should be able to get to that in @Active boot disk so I'll try that once the current scan is finished in that programme. Thanks Kumagoro.

Any thought on the 'bad sectors'? Terminal? I vaguely recall it may not be if its just a few sectors?

A few bad sectors isn't a big issue, but it depends on if they are stable and if they are getting any worse. For the cost of a new drive 'd take it out, bin it and buy a new bigger 320 gig drive and be done with it.

    Re: Dead drive after Dban?

I totally see your point Behemoth. But for the learning sake I'll see this one through; running Acronis rescue disk utilities, I see the disk is 'unallocated'. Does this mean is it is not initialised?

Does that explain why it shows up in the Disk Editor, but not in the Active Boot disk Win PE O/S?
    Seems to make sense?

I just want to be sure I am right before calling it dead and have already learned how much I have forgot!

EDIT: Have partitioned it according to Acronis utilities. Still load Win 7 & and it freezes with the green bar halfway through '1.Collecting info..'.

As Active@ also freezes after set up in RAM, I am worried I will be buying a disk for nothing as I am not convinced its the disk yet?

    Really struggling with this one.

EDIT 2: Have got Active Boot Disk's hard disk monitor on ; seems ok can see bad sector's but SMART is ok with it. So the disk is ok. So why have I got O/S loading probs? Will check O/S dvd in another machine in a minute.
    Any other thoughts gents/ladies?
