Did all the above! I guess its time to reinstall xp and I really don't want to do that! Lets see if someone else has any good ideas that haven't already been tried? I thank you for your time and have a great day...mrbs

I got the laptop used with no discs with it at all! I don't know what people think they are going to do with the ones they got with it but who knows? so I think I will have to do a total install? thats where my puter knowledge stops and I'll give it to my friend..
