CD rewriter not recognised by XP

Windows XP does not recognise my CD rewriter as a recording device so I am unable to burn CD's directly from Windows. Nero and other applications have no problem burning to CD's on this drive.

If I right-click on the drive in My Computer and go to Properties there is no Recording tab so I can't enable recording. If I modify the registry so that the Recording tab appears Windows still doesn't recognise the drive as a recording device.

This CD rewriter is a somewhat obscure Mirai CRD-BP1700P-M. Maybe that is the problem?

I must ask why you'd want to use XP's native burning function as it's not very good?

That drive might possibly be a rebranded CDRW of another manufacturer (happens quite a bit.) I don't know though, and I still aren't sure quite how to get XP to recognise it.

I know XP uses Roxio technology, so perhaps it's out of date and you'll have to await an update from MS - if one ever comes out...

Yes, the Mirai drive is (I think) a re-branded Sony. I had it installed on another computer also running XP and it was recognised OK and I used it to burn a lot of audio tracks using XP's built-in burning functions, which incidentally, I found to be very easy to use.
