CPU usage at 100% after increasing RAM

I have recently replaced my 2x1GB sticks of RAM (2GB) with 2x2GB stick (4GB) and now my system takes ages to boot up, and when it eventually does, my Dual CPU's are always at 100%. Can anyone help me out with this. The system was faster with 2GB and the CPU's would fluctuate between 10%-80% on a good day!

You need to go through a few steps, as well as providing us more information.
Firstly, try booting with just 1 x 2GB stick in one slot, and then repeating with the other in the other slot, and see if there is any difference.
Secondly, what OS, and what other system specs do you have?
Have you changed page file size?

Re: CPU usage at 100% after increasing RAM

If i boot with 1 2GB stick it works normally (as it would do when i had 2 1GB sticks)

    I'm currently running Windows 7 64bit.
I have an ASUS P5N32-SLi SE Deluxe Motherboard.
CPU is an Intel Core 2 DUO Extreme E6800 2.93GHz (4Mb)
Original memory was Corsair DDR2 TX Pro 2GB PC6400

New memory is Corsair DDR2 TWIN2X4096-6400C5C

P.S. I built the machine in 2007, however, i am far from expert on all things PC gummins related. In fact it was a complete fluke that it worked after plugging everything in. Where possible, please keep tech terms to a minimum

P.P.S. What is a page file size...why can't i just plug them in!

Well i have done a bit of digging around. I found out how to increase the page file size, but that had no affect. i came a croos a post on another website and it appears that it maybe smething to do with the svchost.exe. I started ending process and eventually the windows aero became disabled and everything sped up for a minute or two...untill windows aero kicked back in again. Any thoughts? Is this a graphics card issue? Maybe the graphics card doesnt like 4GB or RAM....?

Re: CPU usage at 100% after increasing RAM

OK, well i bought a new 2TB HDD with my memory, and have decided to install a fresh version of windows 7 in the vain hope that when everything is up and running i wont have this cpu nonsence!

If it doesn't work, i might just build myself a new PC!

Should the latter be the case, what is the best Mobo/CPU/Memory configuration to get (i gave up on PC gaming many moons ago, so any decent GPU will do to keep me chugging along!). My pet hate is sloooooow computers, but at the same time, i dont want to be upgrading in 2-3 years!

Re: CPU usage at 100% after increasing RAM

Does it do the same in safe mode? Sometimes startup programs cannot handle large amounts of RAM. Also check you do not have a virus and memory timings in the bios have not been changed from auto.

Did you buy the memory as a paired kit? Try putting the new RAM in slots 1 and 3 and the old in 2 and 4.
