I've a problem with what M$ are about to do

Microsoft Demonstrates New Hard Drive Search

"Search results, such as e-mail, e-mail attachments, pictures and documents, were also returned nearly instantaneously" OK fine but presumable it only works with M$ outlook email

"Results from the Web for the same search terms are displayed on a separate pane to the right." NO thankyou

Why would anyone want to search for something on a local drive or area network and for the same search term on the web. Surely if I'm searching for a file xyz1234.bak on my C: drive the web results will be meaningless. Perhaps a little but more interesting if I'm searching for bigboobparty.mpg but even so I don't get it.

Stinks of a heavy handed trickery to get more people using the M$ web search engine.

yeah. also. if you ARE searching for local files they are uploaded <- the search terms that is -> to msn search engine. sounds a bit big brother/bother to me.

My mates web site gets crawled about 5-8 times more often by the m$ search engine crawler than the google bot. This has been happening for the last few months. He suspects that MSN search will have a more complete search than google in a few months. But who is going to use it ?

erm ok i gonna contest your arguements here

Sounds like your talking about the winFS system, and the basic premise to it is great. Rather than the conventional searches taking just a few mins, you can find that 'misc' video in a few seconds Its integrated into the filing system so no it doesnt only work with outlook =) works with any file. Some of the longhorn builds have versions of this system and it seems to work well so far from what I have seen.

not seen the web search thing before but this does have potential uses. Eg if your searching for a particular dll or exe. I know that this could be useful, I've had to seatch for exe's or dlls in the past and cant find them on my HD so go to the web to find them. this new feature could save time

ofc winFS would be abl to be disabled as it runs as a service...tho why you would want to is beyond me. The web search thing would be equally simple to turn off i rekon, either with a built in option or a reg tweak

sry for the long rant but i rekon that this could be a good thing
