Yet Another Problem

hey guys,

lol I’ve had a hell of a time getting my new comp up and running, which glad to say you guys have been able to help me with! The most recent problem was that I installed three games on my comp UT, Rise of Nation and Max Payne 2! RON and Max Payne 2 worked fine but UT was crashing not long after it was on, so from some good advice I was told to get the new CAT 4.10's drivers! The problem was solved, UT worked like a dream went straight online played on it for a good couple of hours b4 I had to go to work.

Went to work, came back, connected to Internet started chatting to my mates, then the comp restarted! Goes back on windows connect to the Internet again then its restarts again, its been doing it ever since

So there you go yet another wonderful problem: angst:

When it restarts, is it as though somebody hit the reset button, or with a blue screen just before the restart? If it had a blue screen, then you can change the settings so that it doesn't restart, and can write down the message it displays to see if it means anything to anybody on here!

To stop it restarting: Start/Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery... and untick the Automatically Reboot box.

I think you should boot into safe mode and run a good antivirus program.
And while you are in safemode install a software firewall which will enable you to monitor your in and outgoing connections.
Your symptons sound like the old sasser worm.

Wasn't there the windows exploit (RPC iirc) where it gives you a warning for 10 seconds and then shuts down your pc?

when its restarts the montior screen just goes black, next think i know its starting up again! i did have a blue screen comes up once but the writing on the screen was just messed up!

last time it did it i got this message on a black screen, blue box and red writing it said "ATTENTION OUT OF RANGE H:36.1KHz V44.9KHz" it just stayed there and i had to turn it off! no idea what this means

I think this has something to do with the refresh rate being set too high for the monitor. Why this would change by itself i have no idea.

I mean the ones from Windows Update, although if you have SP2 on, I believe it has all of the hotfixes included anyway.

lol already tried that, only new drivers i put on were the ones for the graphic cards and i uninstalled them and reinstalled the old ones, restarted and then not long after i was on windows it did it again for me!

lol which uni in durham does he go 2?

Can you check that your gfx card is not overheating? Also can you touch the northbridge and your cpu heatsink (very carefully) to make sure these are working properly?

i'm not sure how to check the gfx temp or what you mean by touching the northbridge and the cpu heatsink?
