Is My CPU Dead ?? PLEASE HELP

    hey all.

right, basically my order came yesterday

    (it was a amd64 Winchester 3200+ 90nm (socket 939)
    and a A8V Deluxe Rev 2 motherboard

set it all up fairly simply simply,

the only thing that confused me slightly was an extra power connector (you know on the p4 mobos (i believe) u have that 4 (12v) plug thing u connect to the mobo from the psu where on the amd boards its a bit longer, well this mobo had both which could be usual but ive never encountered it so i left it unplugged , plugged it in, green light came on the4 mobo, great i thought, switched it on, it wouldnt post and the asus voice thing was telling me that it had failed the cpu test arghh.

took it back out made sure everything was clean and refitted the heatsink, same issue arghhhh, tried it with that strange plug now in, still wouldnt post but this time no voice telling me about the cpu but this time it would also power off the computer when i held the power button down, where with it unplugged it wouldnt

ive been up half the night trying to figure out why this wont work as the board should support the cpu (from bios 1007 onwards) where mine being rev 2 means it should be ok ???

im not sure wat to do now as i dont know for sure whether the cpu is dead or if its the mobo, perhaps theres sumthing ive missed and not pluged in, or maybe a jumper ??

if anyone could offer any help id be really greatful as im at a complete halt

im going to e mail ocuk (bought it from them) and asus but i dont expect replies

    im majorly screwed guys

    thanx. JimmyBoy

Do you have the manual for the Mobo? If so read it cover to cover - twice! There's a good chance you have to change jumpers for the processor (at least you often used to have to on Socket A boards). It should also explain the power connectors.

Failing that if it says the cpu test has faild, it probably has. Either the CPU is seated wrong or it's faulty, either 'cos you got a dud version or because it's been fried. Did you mount the heatsink and fan etc correctly? If so OCUK should replace a faulty part (they did for me, but I drove up there and collected it myself, but I had more spare time then).

Let us know how you get on, I'm planning a build with this mobo in the near future so am interested to know if there are problems. Also let us know how OCUK treat you, allways good to hear which stores have good post-sales care.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

right, ive been able to sort this out...
all my problems came down to not clearing the cmos

then it powered up into the bios and auto detected the cpu correctly, tho it was rev 1006 so i flashed the bios to 1008 for winchester support one thing im surprised at is with rev 1008, there is no option for changing the multiplier

and as yet, im unable to find how to adjust the v core as its at 1.4 and im told amd recommend 1.5

the main thing here for me was that the mobo took the cpu and allowed me to flash the bios when i was so scared the problem was it needed flashing to accept the winchester altogether...

    phew....

    thanx guys

You need to enable "Standard overclocking" (iirc). Multiplier/vcore adjust are hidden away in a sub-option unless you suddenly cant find it now since the BIOS flash - in which case I dont know.
