Question System hangs, monitor -> standby mode

Greetings one and all - first time poster so please bear with me!

I have had my system for a little under a year, details below, and have recently found that it occasionally hangs. I'm just sitting watching tv (on the desktop) and the screen will go into powersave mode. Oddly I can still hear the tv but there's no picture and nothing wakes the monitor. It happened a couple of days ago, with the tv on, whilst I was on the net. I was scrolling through a page wuith the mouse wheel when I got a loud beep, the mouse pointer wouldn't respond nor did the keyboard. A few seconds later the screen went into standby mode. Rebooting the system works normally and I have never had any errors on restarting (not even scan disk etc) Can't find an error log anywhere. Any thoughts?

    System Info:

    Athlon XP 2500+
    Abit NF7 - S
    Radeon 9800se AIW

btw Am running Windows 2000 SP4

If you get the latest motherboard drivers and utilities, there could well be some software that shows you the heat of your processor etc. Have a look in BIOS and see what the settings are in there, at a certain temperature it will turn off... you'll normally get a beep first though.

Dunno if there are any freeware utilities that will show you the temperatures?

http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ Motherboard Monitor 5 (MBM5) is a free temp monitoring tool, although they stopped working on it earlier this year Its worth checking to see if it'll pickup the temps...
