Assuming your settings have not been altered, the cache will be rebuilt just surfing. Windows will build up the cache as you go. Remember, you emptied it, so it needs to be replenished. TIF's are useful for speedier surfing, but they harbor viruses and some trojans, too, so cleaning your TIF's regularly is good from that aspect.

If you're looking for an increase in speed and to free up disk space, this is just for you.

Try it, it works well. Set it to your liking, and run at the end of a session. You will be amazed at how much disk space you recover, 700MB is not uncommon!

Does the utility for viewing Index.dat files scrub them as well?

Not that I know of, but that would depend on which Index.dat tool you are talking about; there being a few. I guess it would depend on whether or not the tool in question has that facility.

Here are some other cleaners that may be of interest to you.
Crap Cleaner is very popular, and is good, too! It certainly removes some Index.dat's. but I'm not sure if it takes care of them all.

For Index.dat viewing and deletion, try these:
Index.dat Suite. Does what it says on the box. Don't forget to read the info first, though.

And Index Dat Spy from Steven Gould, another fine utility.

    Hi,

I am wondering if the folder was deleted rather than just the files in it. Some utilities can be a little harsh, such as the cleaner in ZA. You can search for the folder manually, or enter the manual method as shown, and this will show the folder's contents, if present.

If you don't mind checking the registry (be very careful), you'll find the relevant folder there.

This is the manual removal method:

Temporary Internet Files and history in Internet Options.

Go: Start-->Run, then enter "%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp" folder. (minus the quotes)

It's a good idea to do that, or run "Clean Up" regularly. After a long surfing session, 20 - 30 MB can be claimed back.

To bring things back, try a system restore, assuming you're using XP, and see if that puts things back in order. If it does, then use only Clean Up, or the manual method above thereafter. Always make only one change at a time, and satisfy yourself that everything is running properly before making further changes. It'll save you a lot of trouble in the long run.
