Help! Looking for External Hard Drive Enclosure

I have a spare Maxtor 120GB SATA Hard Drive knocking about and need to put it in an External Case to run some backups and serious data transfers. I would like to have Firewire and or USB interfaces for preference. I have googled and oogled but not found anything in the UK. Addonics do a SATA to IDE interface http://www.addonics.com/products/io/adsaide.asp and I am trying to source one in the UK.

In the mean time - anyone seen anything suitable?

    Many Thanks

Internal SATA Drive (NOT IDE) -> Firewire/USB external interface.

Most boxes that take a SATA internal drive, that I have seen, only external SATA interface. If you haven't seen one or if you think this is not feasible then let me know also! Thanks in advance...

Good problem - but I don't think i've seen any that will do the conversion. Basically as you'd need to incorperate a SATA to USB2/Firewire interface inside the Caddy, and that'd add a fair bit to the cost.

Nushuttle, Valueplus (a Korean outfit) make one, their model SPIO352-SUS. As to where to actually get it, I've only found it on US sites, and usually ones that don't ship internationally. Best of luck.

Many thanks for the replies. I think I am going to go with an adapter, assuming I can get hold of this one from Addonics. I have contacted their UK distributers so we shall see. I should then be able to choose any external hard drive case, probably an Icy Box. Will let you know.

What about using a SATA Backplate and the IB-350StS-BL?

The IB-350StS-BL can take SATA drives and has a SATA interface, so you can plug it into the SATA Backplate. Hey presto.

Good idea - but don't think it'll work with my laptop or my clients! This is the main reason for problem - finding a universal device. I suppose I could just buy a bloody IDE drive... would be quicker than all this messing around

Ahh, you didn't mention a Laptop! Or did you?

Hmm, in that case, you'd be better off either trading your SATA for a PATA if anyone's willing to do it, or just buy a PATA drive and use your SATA drive somewhere else...

    Talking Got It!

    Hi all

Quick update, I emailed NextCom Europe, who are the UK distributors of the SATA to IDE interface http://www.addonics.com/products/io/adsaide.asp. Price was £30.50 inclusive of VAT and delivery to UK address. They will accept cheque, credit card (via Paypal) and bank transfer and were an absolute pleasure to deal with, 'big-up' to Gordon

Orders can be sent to: sales@easydatastorage.com, stock number is ADSAIDE (SATA - IDE Converter).
