    Maxtor Onetouch drive locked?

Got a 300gb Maxtor OneTouch II usb/firewire drive to back up all my stuff at work. Works machine had a big breakdown but had all my stuff backed up onto the maxtor. Rebuilt my work machine and installed XP Pro as opposed to 2000. I then went to recover all my files off the Maxtor but it only shows up as 'other' and 'locked drive'. I've tried all sorts but it just stays completely locked and is completely inaccessible. It was never set up with a password at any time. Maxtors advice is to connect it up to a different computer and format it again, which is fairly useless advice when you consider it was bought to guard against data loss. Any ideas how to unlock it?

Silly question, but you have installed the One Touch software, haven't you ?

Try installing the softare on another PC and see if that one is able to access the drive.

Tried with software installed and without, and various degrees inbetween. Also tried it on different machines, still locked. Last attempt (before it gets turned into a rectangular discus) will be with a mini mac in the corner of the office.
