    Very slow Half Life 2

    Hi there,

I am a huuuuge computer n00b, but I built myself a computer the other night, and it seems to run fine... but HL2 runs like a bag of nails

    Spec:

    AMD Sempron 64 2500
    1.2 Gb DDR 400, PC3200
    80Gb Samsung SATA
    Asus K8N - AGP 8x
    GeForce 5600FX

I know it's not the fastest thing on the planet... but HL2 runs really bad unless it's in 640x480... and then I feel it's struggling also it misses polys and things

I have the latest drivers and BIOS, and it's a fresh install of WinXP Pro (with all updates)

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

    Edit:

I did a burn in overnight and it was fine.... the Vid Card is a handmedown... so I am suspecting that .. but any other thoughts

Did you install the mobo drivers from the manufacturer? ALso worth checking sound card drivers (could be part of mobo drivers if sound is onboard) are up to date.

    Hi there,

I will try the latest mobo drivers tonight when I get home... I think whats worried me the most though is the fact the game is missing polys and things I think because I've been suspecting the vid card soo much, I've probably become blind to it

Sorted it... turned out to be the 256mb stick of ram I put in... I forgot it's cheap stuff and made it all go funny

    Running HL2 at 1280x1024 and it's lovely

    Thanks for your help

Just as an offtpoic (didn't see the need to post a new thread )

Would Doom 3 run ok on my system... roughly?

    Cheers

Yep. D3 runs faster than HL2 on my PC.

Doom 3 will run slower with higher settings - Doom 3 stresses my PC on max, where Day of Defeat on max is a piece of pie (80fps).

Your PC should run Doom well enough on the lower settings. If you like the higher settings and a spare hundred then get a new 6600GT or X800GT and watch your system fly

I've had the same thing happen to me in the past! was annoying cause i had to send the ram back in the end.
