can you Mix & Match DDR?

got a quite a good question here[ knowing me ,it's a nooby question ]

anyways, i currently have 1GB [512MB x2] Geil Value DDR400 in the pc, im looking to upgrade to 2GB [only 1 slot left though]...

im just wondering , if i buy a Generic DDR400 stick of 1GB,will the CAS latency match the the Geil or if its Latency is too slow, will the Geil downclock to the Generic Latencys?

my mobo is Gigabyte K8NS Pro skt 754

The RAM should slow down to the speed of whatever is slowest. However, I wouldn't buy a stick of generic RAM - I'd get some cheap branded stuff, such as Corsair Value Select.
