ethernet connection help needed

set the above up for my son installed xp ans sp2 plugged in cable modem but keep getting limited connectivity, have tried reinstalling and keep getting the same result tried a repair connection and it failed.
Any help on how to set this up?

More info needed. Which cable modem? in what way is connectivity limited? Speed? Services? Applications? What other software is running on the machine? Personal firewalls? Settings for the XP SP2 firewall?

Its a speedband cable modem with tw, i have xp pro on the pc with sp2.
I have tried uninstalling the ethernet port and on boot it sees it and reinstalls it i have all firewalls of but i keep getting conection issues it reports that it is unable to assign a address to it, also tried to repair connection but it states that it cant repair it.
Can connect my pc to the modem and connects no problem
Any ideas?

On the PC that does connect, what IP address is it getting? Try assigning an IP address manually on the 'dodgy' computer...
