Angry USB mass storage devices not working

My mum has just given me an SD card based MP3 player which she found somewhere (possibly from school, she runs the lost property). I shoved my SD card in and pluugged it in....and no removable drive appeared in My Computer. I removed the card, and shoved it back in my digital camera (which had previously worked perfectly)- and again, no joy at all. Now my windows install is a bit old and b0rked- so I plugged the camera into my second comp, which is a dually I just used for crunching Find-A-Drug (RIP). Again- neither device brought up a removable drive in My Computer. So I'm stumped- why would my camera just stop working in both computers? When you plug it in the bubbles appear as normal in the bottom right of the screen, and inform you after a few seconds that the device is installed and ready to use. There's just no way (as far as I can see) of accessing it. Just in case the card had somehow become screwed I tried the camera without the card (it has built in memory) and again, no joy.

Any help would be appreciated. Has a recent windows update maybe made it harder to plug in removable devices for security reasons? Device Manager has so far not helped me at all.

If you have any network drives mapped it might have use the same drive letter as the removable storage, have had this at work a couple of times. In mycomputer it appears as a network drive, but when you open it it contains the removable storage.

The camera still doesn't seem to be working, but I uninstalled Deamon Tools and the MP3 player showed up. All very odd. Thanks for the replies.
