At the "choose the program" alert you should see "browse", click on this and it should open a selection programs so if you are playing mp3 files select windows media, if it is pictures you are trying to open then select a photo editing program or windows media viewer.

It's just a question of selecting the appropriate program for the item that you are trying to open

thanks very much for responding! excuse me if im sounding stupid but im not very computer literate.
it wont run any programs from the main screen(i think thats called the desktop)
for example nero express (cd burner program),gamespy arcade, pacific poker.
when double click it throws up the "choose a program" window.
how can i run these programs?
    thanks again!

Open up an explorer window, tools options file types, see if there is an entry there for.exe files, if there is delete it.

It might be worth running some av software too, as a lot of viruses use that kind of approach to get themselves run everytinme you load a program.

I would guess that something has damaged the file association for .lnk files (the shortcuts on your Desktop or Start Menu)

Assuming you have Windows XP, go to the following website and click on "Link File Fix for Windows XP" which is on line 12:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Save the file to your hard disk, double click on it and then say yes to the import prompt.

Hopefully that should sort it out
