Oblivion Problems!

I have a serious performance issue when playing Oblivion. The game will pause for 1 sec, go for 2 sec, pause for 1 sec, etc. This even happens on the first loading screen when the start the game where it says 'Bethesda Softworks' so it's not a simple FPS problem. I've tried updating my video drivers to the new Nividia ones that are optimised for Oblivion, updated sound card drivers, re-installed the game. Nothing changed!

Here's my system spec:
Athlon64 3500
ABIT AV8
Geforce 6800GT
1GB RAM
Audigy 2 Sound Card

Any ideas?

Do you have a beta version of ati tools installed? If so turn of temperature monitoring

Nope, and now after a complete re-format it STILL does the same thing!

Perhaps not reading the CD/DVD properly? Try a different disc drive, if you have one.
