System problems after using Media Player 9

My desktop system has recently started slowing to a crawl after playing a video in Media Player 9. I get crashes from numerous programs when I try to shut down the unresponsive system. Does anyone have any ideas what is happening?

It's unlikely that Windows Media Player is the cause of your systems recently instability, i'd probably put it down to coincidence but i could be wrong.

I'll make the assumption you're using Windows 2000 or earlier and not XP otherwise you'd have version 10, if you're on 2000, press ctrl+alt+del and select the processes tab. Organise all processes by cpu usage, other than System Idle Process, what are those listed with high usage?

Poking for a little more background information, what occurred when you were watching the video in Media Player did the system crash or was there any sign that something had gone wrong, did the video play at all... how have you reached the conclusion that Windows Media Player 9 is to blame?

    laze.

I'm using XP. I concluded that MP9 was to blame as the problem is reproducible, and only occurs after a video has been played in MP9. The symptoms are a severe slowdown in all processes.

Upgraded to MP10, seems to have sorted out that problem anyway.
