Second 7800GT and overclock your cpu, you ain't gonna see too much speed from a faster cpur than you could already get from o/c your current cpu.

    Now for a shameless plug:

Edit :*oops sorry you can't see that post as you don't have access yet*

    My opinion still stands though

mantis is having trouble overclocking past like 2.3, it becomes unstable and fps seems to drop. It just doesnt want to clock at all, so he was thinking of buying a 3700 or something and overclock that as i dont have any probs at all clocking mine.

Why does it have to be a BFG 7800GT, they're all the same underneath and I trust you're aware that from release 80.00 drivers you can now mix & match different brands when setting up sli.

Now go & buy my Gigabyte 7800gt that's for sale!

Only a 300mhz o/c, hmm thats poor. You sure it's not something else thats holding him back rather than the cpu?? Either way as most games these days gpu power driven I'd still say go for a graphics upgrade/sli

Tbh, SLI isn't what it's cracked up to be as the game you are playing needs to have a profile for it (which nvidia add in driver releases) and you only see a major difference in high, high resolutions.

Then again if you have the cash go for it but be prepared to sit on the nvidia forums alot

yeh, it cant be anything stopping it from overclocking, he and me have tried clocking on 2 diff motherboards, brand new ram, tried it with old ram too. New psu, hyper 580, and tried it with old psu. Must be a fualty chip, or stupdily unstable

Are you new to overclocking S939 cpu's (no offence intended) or do you genuinely think it's a hardware problem.

*Edit* scrap that, just read Merlin's post, must be a bad chip then, bummer. Upto what cpu voltage did you try & what were the core temps? I'm thinking maybe bad contact with the core & IHS

the core temps where fine, like 32-36 on idle, maybe a snadge high for a artic freezer. Messed around with the voltage a snadge. 1.4 to like 1.5 I dont think its a bad contact unless it was put on badly twice, once by the manufacturer and once by mantis wit hthe arctic freezer. what also seems to occur is if u put it up to say something simple like 10x270, it will undercklock to like 2000 after a few seconds of being in desktop. Quite strange. tried dropping down to 3x 4x with no luck also

That sounds like cool 'n quiet is still enabled, temps do indeed seem ok although I think you mis-understood me (unless you're saying he removed the IHS himself). I'm actually talking about bad contact between the actual cpu core & metal heatspreader AMD seal on top of it to stop you crushing the core when mounting a heatsink.

Apologies for getting off topic but have you tried a different bios?
