did you buy CSS through steam??

i bought mine a few months ago, i was under the impression that if i reformat, and then reinstall steam to log back into my account, the game should be there to download again

you'll need for someone to confirm this though

If you format you can download the Steam client (500k ish) and then re-download all your games etc...

but you want to backup the .gcf files which you can find in the "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps" directory.

You can just copy those files onto a dvd (or another harddrive), and then when you download the steam client you can just fire it up, close it down, copy the .gcf files back over, and you wont have to go through the hassle of all the updates

I'm not entirely sure what the 'steams own' backup thing does, but the .gcf files hold all the game data

Make sure you backup your steam dir to a disk. When I had a PC I installed steam onto its own partition so I never had to touch it again
