try typing msconfig in run and turn off as many programs as u can under startup and then reboot/shutdown and try then. Your probably getting a program that wont shutdown properly. Also try safemode as it doesnt load anything and see if it takes long

As Merlin says, it's probably just 1 bleeping program being a pain in the neck.
Installed anything new lately (or is this the new new build that you've just got up and running). Antivirus, P2P, anything?

A KVM switch allows you to share one monitor, keyboard and mouse between 2 or more PCs, but I don't think that's the problem

As FatalSaviour says, its not likely to be an issue, it's much more likely to be an unresponsive program - have you installed anything new recently that would happen to coincide with the this problem occuring?

    registry edit

this page has is a XP Shutdown troubleshooting page that might help.

Otherwise there is just a registry edit (that's been mentioned above). Found this in the June 2006 PC Advisor mag:

find "Hkey_Current_User\Control Panel\Desktop" in regedit and click on it.
in the right-hand window there'll be something that says "AutoEndTasks". Change 'Value Data' to 1 and press enter. There also should be 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' with a default value of 5000 (milliseconds, so that's 5 seconds). Change that if you like to a shorter value and windows will kill apps quicker when you shutdown (or if you kill it in Task Manager)

There's one more, in 'Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control' in here you want 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' and as before, change that to some value (in milliseconds, so 1000 = 1 second) that you want Windows to wait before it kills (or asks you to kill) services when you shut down. Although apparently some crafty services like to increase this number automatically, so you might find that this'll have been changed back if you check after you reboot.

Before you do any of that though, export a copy of your registry and save it somewhere safe. Then if you make a mistake, you can fix it!

There are a number of 3rd party programs that claim to 'instantly shutdown' your computer. If you chuck 'quick shutdown' into google, it'll come up with something!

the registry hack just treats the symptoms though, this is usually a sign of a much more deeply rooted problem.

i would suggest it is either related to a program you have installed lately, or it could be spyware/virus in which case, you do have an up to date anti virus and anti virus program? if not i can reccomend some good free ones
