    Overclocking.

    Basically I have:

    3700 64 SKT754 (2.4ghz at STOCK)
    Abit NV8
Geil Value DDR 400 (2*1gb sticks)

These chips are supposed to be good clockers. Now someone in another thread of mine said to do the following:

    Increase CPU speed to 250mhz
Put the ram on a 166 divider
    Lower HTT setting to 4

Now when I did this, the PC refused to boot. I managed to get it to boot, but it told me that I had a corrupt boot sector (I selected 225 cpu speed, rather than 250). Anyway, is there anything I can do, or does that seem like a no go? Should I have popped a bit more voltage in or something? If anyone has any ideas, please share - oh and please be atleast 95% sure that they won't blow my PC up .

Edit: The reason I didn't use 250 is because my chip is a SKT754 and the dude who gave me the advice thought it was a SKT939, which runs at 2200 rather than 2400 iirc. The PC did post at 2700 (225 cpu, 166 ram and 4* HTT).

does it work fine when you put it back down to stock settings? Or do you still get the 'Corrupt Boot Sector' message?

    Well, here's what happened:

Saved settings, rebooted monitor went into standbye.

Hard reset, holding the insert key down = nothing.

Took power cable out for 1 minute and boot holding insert = booted with overclocked settings.

Gave corrupt message, so rebooted again to black screen - did the above again and resert CPU speeds. Once I did this (put it back to default) it booted into windows fine.

Edit: Sorry if my post seems confusing, I was asking for general advice - as the boot sector isn't a problem now (booted with stock clocks), it's just is it possible to get it running stable at the OC speed.

If you just push to 225, it will be 2.7Ghz. I doubt a S754 CPU could go 2.7Ghz without adding some voltage to it.

Try lower HTT to 3 and see if that helps.

As arthrleung says 2.7 seems optomistic. Try CPU speed to 205 first and then increment up slowly. You can put a small increase into the Vcore if you want but if you are using the stock cooling you should only aim for a modest overclock (maybe 215).

As posted above most s754 are ethier Newcastle (512 cach) or clawhammer (1 Mb cach) for ethier to reach 2.7 is very rare most can happily reach about 2.5 but as your stock is 2.4 you may be more lucky.

I think that when you try 250 you need to drop your cpu multiplier to x10 as this will give 2.5 (stock x12 would give 3 which the newer venice core 939 only just reach), as well as all the rest you were already doing.

    Hope this helps.

ps my s754 3200+ (2.2) can happliy reach 2.5 with x10 multiplier when the weather is cooler now I'm running at stock.

This here is the most likely cause of the no boot. The S754 boards and CPUs are specced to run a maximum HTT of 1600 as opposed to 2000 on the S939 equivalents.

As such, the stock setting for you is 4, and if overclocking you should lower this to 3 or under.

The HTT = CPU freq x HTT multiplier, so for 250 in the CPU, this gives you 4x250 =1000. You then need to multiply this by 2 (bi-directional so twice the rated number) = 2000. This is outside the spec for the CPU.

Lower it to 3x, which gives you 250x3x2 = 1500. This is under the maximum rated 1600 and should be good to go.

    Holy thread resurrection Batman.

Anyway, if you don't have a clue you need to try and help yourself by reading up a bit on the internet first.

You've posted a lot here today requesting help for overclocking. The bottom line is, folk will help you, but no one is going to do it for you. You need to get a basic understanding for yourself first.
