Opteron Heat

Having just upgraded to an Opteron 170 I'm having a bit of a heat issue... I've got an Akasa Eclipse 62 fit with two Akasa Ambers (9v each) and an Akasa Evo 33 for the CPU.

At stock, the chip runs at 37°C while just sitting on the Windows desktop. When I overclock to 2.4GHz with 1.425v everything seems fine, the temperature only just increases, to around 40°C... but then under load uGuru starts setting off sirens - I came quickly off CSS and checked Everest to find it was in the high 50s!

Could this just be the chip settling in... or do I need to start thinking about better cooling?

Might want to try a better CPU cooler. I don't think its a "bedding in" type problem unfortunately.

    Edit: These are good coolers:

I don't get it though, from everything I've read the Evo 33 is on a par with the Arctic Cooling Pro.

My Arctic Freezer 64 Pro barely handle my Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.7Ghz, let alone a dual core processor...

I'm using a XP-90 now and its still not coping well with the summer heat. You'll probably need something like a CNPS9500. The Ninja Plus is good too.

The Akasa handled my 3700+ at 2.8GHz really well, and hell, the guy who I got the Opteron from could run it at 2.8GHz on the stock cooler!

Temps are a bit better this morning at 34°C anyway, so I'll see how it goes...

EDIT: Back up to 37°C now, bugger...

AHA! It would appear it's my PSU heating up, I just dual primed it and after only a few minutes it was reading 64°C!

I'll admit I've no first hand experience with the evo 33, but I've read some stinking reviews about it.

Personally I'm using the Ninja Plus, but mainly for the silence aspects.

Try re-applying the thermal goop. If that doesn't work, then you'll have to be more open to folks suggestions.

Why would the PSU be a factor? Is it exhausing hot air onto the CPU or something? Which PSU is it?

You were right about the PSU (Tagan 480W), that's what's causing the sirens, not the CPU.

I'll swap it at Scan HQ tomorrow.

I have even had high temps in this heat with a dual core CPU

It creates a whole load of strain on the chipset too - meaning you get uber high PWN IC and chipset temps.

I'd get a better CPU cooler or clock down till it chills out

CPU's fine at stock now, tops out at 51°C under load.

PSU however, tops at 68°C under load... oh dear.

Yeah I think the dual core puts a strain on the motherboard etc as a whole

Just tested at 2.4GHz, CPU got up to the high 50's but the PSU hit 77°C before I stopped it, this is really really starting to suck...

Dude I had the same PS (and MOBO) as you and seen the other thread about it dying so probably that. I had a Big typhoon on the proc (v similar to you Akasa?) and on stock volts I could easily do 1:1 250X10 for 2.5GHz, or divider 300X9 for 2.7. And a wee bump to get the 2.8. I think you have to be careful on the AN8 with the moffsetts (PWM) though due to the passive cooling on the board and I think the BT helped here as it made airflow in this area.

Maybe need to ghetto some cooling onto the MOBO or take the plunge and get another cooler?

It's sorted now man, I swapped my PSU at Scan HQ after they tested it and said that it was basically buggered.

The temps still read something crazy on the new one, but unlike with the old PSU, I can't actually feel massive amounts of heat coming from it (my case remains cool to the touch), so I'm thinking the temp' monitor is screwed.

I left it priming for 4 hours while I was out at 2.4GHz (1.4v) and the PSU apparently got up to 90°C, pah I say, so I've turned the motherboard alarm off.

I'll be testing 2.8GHz shortly, so I'll keep you posted via PM.

Same case, same CPU cooler, same PSU make and I was getting high 50's on the CPU when I was dual priming it.

Got the water coming in soon so hopefully that will bring it down.

Feels weird having my system at stock :s

Well it's been Priming for over an hour now at 2.6GHz, and Everest thinks the PWN is 102°C... anyone know if there's a way to fix the sensor??

EDIT: I am a fool, I always thought PWM was the PSU, it's not... at all... oh noes!

EDIT 2: Scap this, I'm making a new thread.
