after windows xp install it hangs at dmi pool!

my laptop felt slugglish overloeaded with high cpu usage, cdrom drive is messed so i pulled out laptop hdd so i backed up everything onto a pc hdd.

install xp into laptpo hdd, unplug and plug back into laptop, and it hangs just after verifying dmi pool data with just a blank screeen and a flicking cursor

i re loaded sys defaults in bios, bios recognisese the laptop hdd as a toshiba 40gb.

loaded fdisk, it is set as active,

    run fixmbr sucess

as soon as it posts and i press f8, i can goto safe mode menu and tried to boot from all options, i press safe mode and it always hangs at mup.sys??

    - stil no joy? any tips?

i cloned a ghost gho image to the laptop hdd from my desktop pc as a test, it is an universal windows xp spk2 sys prep image, and that didnt even work

but if i boot to dos, i can see all the data files with a dir command, somethings up>?

HAD THE laptop for 7 years, so i dont think its a hard ware issue. more of one of this software partition issues.

you CANNOT install an OS on a different machine, and put the harddrive in the laptop and expect it to work! you have to install XP on the machine you intend to use it on, otherwise all the drivers/settings/etc will be wrong

but a sys preped image should have been fine or it should of at least START to boot from the hdd and then BSOD or someting at least../

ne ways , the hdd smoked up

need a new laptop hdd thinking either ebuyer or dabs here ...western digital 100gb ata100 8mb buffer ... should i get 2mb or 8mb buffer because its only a couple pence difference, the 8mb seems to be cheaper then 2mb?

they are all 55 avg delivered , so im not fussed, im guessing to go for dabs WD , 100gb, 8mb?

    dabs WD , 100gb, 8mb =

    dabs WD , 100gb , 2mb =

    ebuyer , WD , 100gb , 2gb
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...uct_uid=108818

but then again , a 2mb buffer due to heat issues with 8mbs buffer laptop 2.5" hdds?

unless something really low level (ie ATA drivers) are *really* incompatible with the laptops motherboard, then it would just die...

as for 'the hdd smoked up' what happened? how did you kill it? i would advise getting an external cd drive in order have a better chance installing a new OS, unless you can still get OS's on floppy disk

oh and laptop drives are generally 5400rpm (havent looked at the links) so i doubt 2/8mb cache will make a lot of difference in terms of performance, but if 8mb is cheaper, then go for that

Well, Seagate's Momentus series have 7200rpm variants all the way up to 100GB, as do Hitachi's Travelstar series, but they do cost more. Bought a couple of the Seagates recently to go in a couple of MSI Crystals, and the performance is good.
