Unhappy NEC Firmware vs Nvidia Drivers

Updated firmware for NEC 3550A DVD drive.

All went well for two days then the PC boots but no video signal after Windows loads.

I tried various things and then reinstalled windows XP to my partition. Everything was fine until I re-installed the Nvidia Drivers for XFX 7800 GT 256 Extreme.

During install or just after it the PC video dropped and won't comeback on. I am thinking firmware clash with DVD drive or faulty DVD drive which has been a bit intermittant of late.

    Any help appreciated. Ta!

Yes I have disconnected ribbon lead and disconnect power.

I think their is a firmware incompatibility after flashing the drive. What I have also noticed is that the PC is seeking the floppy after windows is supposedly loaded.

Cannot tell if windows does load on account of there being no video signal to the monitor.

I am going to go into the loft and get a working DVD drive from my old PC and swap it out tonight to see if that fixes the issue. I think this may work as the firmware will be different. If it does, great if not I will re-install XP again and try the second drive.

Also if I use Knoppix DVD it loads up fine - everything works as it should.

    Wish me luck!

Floppy seek in Windows is normal - it polls all drives on startup (hence why CD & DVD drives spin up also).

I doubt the DVD firmware has anything to do with it - there's simply no connection between firmware version on it and the GFX card. More likely the problem is with the nVidia driver you are using, or the video card itself.

I am sat at the PC now.

I have reloaded Win XP twice and I still have the problem.

I have tried removing memory, NIC, Soundcard, GFX power and card itself has been removed and reinserted.

As soon as I load up the drivers onto the fresh XP install it goes off. The programs list registers that the drivers are installed. The drivers have not been changed, I am still using the version I was when working.

Most interestingly if I let Win XP try and load then cut the power I get the option screen 'windows did not start correctly' Choosing 'Last Good Known' means the PC boots. The screen res displays at my normal rate.

Certainly has me puzzled. New DVD drive is in as well.

    I agree.
There cannot be a connection between the DVD and GPU as far as firmware goes.

    Update

I rebooted PC after removing Nvidia Display drivers. It worked first time so launched XP.

The issue is that with no Nvidia Drivers loaded I get a lovely ripple effect as I scroll or move any object on-screen.

I downloaded latest drivers and the same problem occurs. I interupted XP loading and was able to get back in no problem.

Also - just discovered that according to Network Connections I do not have a network connection - as in the section is completely blank - it does not record any network connections.

Neither can I get the DOS prompt and check IPCONFIG. It opens then closes!

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Any help appreciated.

    Update 2

Just lost all of the XP Appearance Options. My PC is now very washed out and displays everything in Windows Classic mode.

I have fully scanned the PC using Kaspersky AV, HomeCall and System Mech 6 Pro 'Spython'. All products have the latest updates.

First thing you should do is install the motherboard drivers. You don't say which motherboard you are using, but for example here are the nForce4 AMD drivers:

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/nforc...k_6.86_uk.html

(Note: Don't install / enable the nVidia firewall thing when prompted).

Then install the latest GFX drivers:

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_2k_93.71_uk.html

Edit: If the above doesn't work, please post your full system specs.

Ohhow I wish it were that simple! The PC was running SP2 when the error first occurred. Anyway, I have reinstalled XP 5 times now and have installed SP2 just now.

The problem is still there, and only ever upon loading the Nvidia Display Drivers. It loads up install shield and attempts to install the drivers then as it starts (progress bar moving) the screen goes black and switches to standy.

The rest I have documented in other posts in tis thread. I have all anti-virus etc turned off when installing.

I am beginning to think hardware fault on the GFX card. Allthough Linux (Knoppix DVD) works perfectly - no scrolling/ripple issues, unsure if this indicates anything

Might well be the graphics card is stuffed. You could try installing earlier version drivers though.

    http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp-2k_archive_uk.html

Edit: The ripple effect you see is common when you install a version of windows that doesn't have native driver support for your graphics card built in.

You could also try installing the video drivers in safe mode, but I'm not sure if safe mode allows this.

Tried Safe Mode and loaded drivers they loaded but caused the same problem.

I have now contacted XFX re warranty duration as documentation on web and in manuals does not state. I have also asked for techincal support.

    Thanks for suggestions.
