    Cant Install Windows XP

My nephew say's his computer has been infected (if thats the right word) with a Keylogger while using msn, i don't no if i'm getting the whole story from him, anyways he's tyred to reinstall XP but nothings happening. I've had a look and set the pc to boot from ROM drive, and you get the following press any key to boot from CD then setup is inspecting your hardware configuration, and thats it nothing but a blank screen after that. Anyone have any ideas how to reslove this of should i just get another HD ?? any advice is most wellcome cheers.

It sounds like more has happened than just a virus infection, but your writing is so difficult to follow. I can't imagine that a keylogger would affect a reinstall in that way.

I would, at this point, try removing the CMOS battery (a round battery on your motherboard), putting it back in, and trying the reboot again. You'll have to re-enter some settings but it might avoid a reinstall.

Sounds like a potential hardware issue. As was said previously a keylogger wouldn't kill an XP installation.

You could run some basic diagnostics for the hard disk dependent on which model and also MemTest for the RAM.

Most of these can be run from a bootable CD or floppy.

Have a look at your xp install disc to see if it's dirty or scratched as this could possibly be your problem.

Just a point as you have also been advised to clear the bios did you remove the power lead from the computer before you cleared the bios as on some computers you have to do this otherwise it wont clear.

We really need more system specs to help further.

For example, if it is a motherboard with a VIA chipset & you are using an SATA drive then you'll need to load the SATA drivers using a floppy in order to install Windows properly. Many Linux versions include the SATA drivers, so don't encounter the same problem.

There are several versions available of this.

    1 for CD
    1 for Floppy
    1 for Windows/Browser Based

If you've downloaded the CD version and burnt the CD uisng the .ISO you need to set it to boot from CD.

If you downloaded the Floppy version you need to set the PC to boot from floppy first.

From your post Im unsure exactly which version you downloaded.

    Post specs of the pc.

As said a simple Keylogger should not effect it in this way, unless it was a Trojan/Hacktool based Variant. Even still this should not effect a re-install.

    1)Is it the disks?
You say the drive works so we can rule that out. I got errors on installing Windows, it turned out to be ram.
2)Can you change the RAM/Try one stick?
    3)Run tests on the HDD

Hi all just came home been working away and my nephew has replaced the seagate 40 GB HD with a new samsung 80GB HD and installed XP onto it. But has always there is a problem, which is he has lost MB Driver CD, i have the same MB as him msi K7N2 Delta they appear to be the same version1.3 and the only difference i can see is the serial number at the bottom of the manual which is G52-M6570XA-R21 (mine), and his is G52-M6570XA-L03. I'am assuming i can install my MB Driver CD would this be ok, otherwise don't really know what to do with it. I know what i want to do to him i'd like to plant my SIZE 10 BOOT right where the sun don't shine, thanks for your help it's most appreciated cheers all.

Are these SATA drives - if yes, then its a floppy with the SATA drivers he needs more than anything.

As for driver CD, yes it should be OK - but it won't help you until has has Windows installed.

OK - good stuff. I misread your last post as the problem was still there on the new drive!
