PC wont start: PSU problem i think...

Well last night my brother was on the omputer playing on some games CS:S probs and he was playing it fine and it had been on for around 21 hours which is the usuall amount of time our PC is on whih should make no differenece anyway.. when all of a sudden it sposedly just turned off as if someone had cut the power. I didnt know till this morning and had a look at it but am unsure what the problem is. I initially thought it may be a Power surge or something but we have a protector adapter so i thought it must be the PSU itself blowing up or something ut the psu seems to be working fine as when i plug it in the little yellow light on the mobo is on and the modem and monitor lights are on thier orange standbys but as i press the on button the comp doesnt turn on..

i also realised that it may be a problem with the PSU fan not turning??? as it makes a noise as if it trys to do something but nothing happens.

Im not quite sure what it is or what to do so any help would be appreciated so i can have a go at fixing it myself before i take it down to the local repair shop..

What are you system specs (including PSU model)

fans spinning/hdd lights on? It could also be the graphics card

im trying to find the specs but it is a Packard Bell that i bought from PC world about a year ago but i cant remember the name but from what i can remember the specs are:

amd 2.4 single core
512mb ram (not sure brand)
ATI X9550
2X seagate ?gb HDD
and i cant really see the brand of PSU :|

but ill find it in a min

And no the fans AR'NT spinning which is what im confused even though there eems to be power going through the system because of lights

If as you say the psu fan is not spinning then I would say thats where the fault lies.

Have you access to another psu to try?

unfortunatly no, the thing is im not aware how the PSU ran before it broke so i cant tell the differences in what is and ist working and wht should and shouldnt happen on the boot

well i sent it in to a local PC repair shop to see if thay can find out what the problem is so hopefully they can tell me so i can either fix it or just get them to do it if thier price is ok

it's likely to be a dead psu or a dead motherboard (i've had both, and both cause the symptoms you reported)

packard bells usually use fsp power supplys

i would say the problem lies with either the psu, motherboard or graphics card.

additionally 21 hours? has the kid no life? ,eyesight?

Ok got a reply and he said the MOBO was fried in a power surge which i think is probably right, and he is asking for £400!!!! to fix.. so i think i am going to have a go myself before i give in o extortion.

as for the 21 hours we usually swap over alot so its not 21 hours striahgt lol as this laptop is no good for games.

£400 for a motherboard change is extortion

even if it has a proprietary part, you shouldn't expect to pay more than half that for the parts & labor

closer to fifty quid if it can take any 'normal' board and you do it yourself
