Interesting idea, but they'd have to support a range of popular SCMs. Everyone should be using git/mercural/bzr by now anyway.
If they could get it added to the VMWare HCL I might be interested in replacing my Thecus N5200Pro with one of these...
What i think would be useful is access externally...
In other words when accessing 238.875.4.3:8080 through a browser.
A nice interface is launched (something along the lines of Media Centre) i.e. easy to use and browse.
Which offers you access to your files from anywhere, through a nice interface which in turn gives the ability to stream music/movies in an external location. (tinterwibble connection being the decisive factor)
So a little scenario: I pop round to a mates, and want to show him a new band/film, so i just tap in the IP/port which pops up the interface, which then allows me to stream the relevant media there and then on his computer/media pc.
Not just remote control, but remote access with the ability to stream the contents.
Another thought... I've not looked at the hardware specs of the device, but what would definitely be awesome would be if they could build some degree of virtualisation into it so you could deploy low-end virtual machines - perhaps looking to partner with something like Turnkey Linux. The thinking behind it being that probably a few people here would like to have some sort of low-power VM lab to tinker with tech.
I appreciate that this would likely mean that the price would be bumped out of the home market, but if they could fit something between buying a server for an ESXi host and attaching to a NAS/SAN for storage and their current offering I suspect that a fair number of geeks worldwide would be interested.
How about incorporating an 802.11n wireless AP & Gigabit switch. That way the Synology becomes the "All in network solution!"
Only a few more days to go until the closing date. Keep them coming, one lucky winner will be walking away with the Disk Station!

How about a integrating a powerline adapter so all you need is a power socket to plug the wee beastie in? That way you can really hide it away
How about having it liquid cooled with the rad ontop, you could then use this as a hot plate to keep your tea warm..
Or, have the water warm a small tank ontop with some fish in it, or some other sort of water based creature's, sea monkies or the likes, that way you dont have a boring looking white box sat there but something that would brighten your desk up..
I find Hard Disk Sentinel an essential piece of software for a server, it monitors the condition of the drive using SMART data and then warns you of any problems. It has saved my data more than once by warning me a hard drive is about to fail.
One of its best features is e-mail alerts, sending you updates when a hard drive is coming to a point where you need to take action. HD Sentinel or something like it would be an excellent addition to any NAS server IMHO.
Decent infra red remote control or something similar so rather than having to use a keyboard and mouse to access files and run them via a browser you can just use a remote, which is designed for that purpose. It would therefore have all of the proper functions you would require on the remote control, i.e. purpose built. I know you could buy a remote seperately, but you want something that would integrate seamlessly with the whole thing.
Have to admit I also like the homeplug idea someone suggested. Only problem would be is if people don't use it, it would just be an expensive s extra as it would have to ship with two homeplugs for true plug and play ability and that would bump up the price significantly for those that wouldn't use it.
Thanks for all the entries. Competition is closed
