    Two misconceptions here:

You're breaking the terms of the warranty, but you are perfectly entitled to replace the firmware with one of your own choosing. The iPhone EULA specifically notes that, "You own the media [i.e. the hardware] on which the media is recorded," and therefore you have the right to load different software into that media. But Apple is not obliged to support you with warranty service if such activity causes the device to become unusable.

No, because Apple's responsibilities under the warranty are explicitly restricted. Warranty coverage always excludes user actions that harm the device, and the legality of unlocking is not of any relevance.

what i dont get is, if the phones unlocked, and apple firmware bricks it. does it enable you to revert back to the old firmware, or back to factory settings?

At the moment it's irretrievably bricked. I agree it would have been kinder for Apple to include a firmware recovery system (especially as their update has bricked several phones that weren't unlocked).

but if your phone gets bricked and is unlocked, there is nothing stopping you replacing the original sim card and sending it back under warrenty, after all, if it has bricked locked phones how do they know yours was not one of them?

the funny thing is there is an alternative to apple's iphone - it is called the LG's prada phone. And btw, the LG iphone came out BEFORE the iphone.

only people who loves their lifes controlled by major corporations would want to get apple's iphone.

to be honest, i think it is not the looks or the gui....it is because it is APPLE...

nokia is coming out withsomething like the iphone soon...but i am sure people will still get the apple version for the 'cool' factor..

Is the update forced or done automaticaly when you dock the iPhone without the user actively requesting the update and being given full information about what it does?

I would have thought that unless the user requests the update with full knowlege that it will brick their phone, then apple might be guilty under the computer misuse act of unlawfully dammaging a computer (iPhone) they don't own without the owner's consent.

i would have to agree with usxhe190 on most of his point, but i would have to add that neither are really special nowadays, there are dozens of comparable WM, POS, symbian etc devices that are comparable

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

maybe comparable in features, but not in looks/gui looks. show me a phone with the almost near apple gui. there is none, you dont have that slide thingy to confirm stuff etc, when the music plays album art shows and theres media controls. me personally id get an iphone, im not in love with apple, i really hate macs and all that but it has that certain style to it that others dont, nano with the gloss effect, and i havent got a nano mp3 player either. so im not really infatuated with apple. as others claim. but yes most other people are but those are the guys/girls queuing to go buy an apple product on the first day.
