Ahh Welcome to the World of Apple.
This kind of rubbish is something us old time Home computer users have had to put up with for years.
You now have 2 companies forcing you to be loyal to them and them only.
    Sony & Apple.

    Give me Microsoft any day.
if you want a phone that lets you play downloaded music from any source or movies that you can move from one format to another, you also get software support from 100s of developers plus many more features that this non 3G, mono Bluetooth headset piece of carp.

Get an HTC/Generic Microsoft Mobile phone; at least once you have bought it, it belongs to you!
It will give you every thing you get with Apple but no headache oh yeah and don't forget you can also install your Satnav on them as well.
Why pay a fortune for a rotten apple, when there is far nicer fruit in the barrel?

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

Apart from the obvious We hate Microsoft brigade attitude.

    Why?

I have never had a days problem with any of my Microsoft phones, apart from battery life in the early days I have never had a fault with one either.

but more importantly for this thread, I have never had Microsoft kill my Phone because they don't like what I am doing with it.
I am curoius as to what problem you see with it

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

Philikon does have a very good point, my last 2 phones have been windows mobile, i've found them far more stable than symbian 60 platform handsets (all 3 i've had).

But i did once have an mx220, peice of crap crashed every few hours.

My last phone didn't crash once (imate sp5). I could easily write games/apps for it (such as a remote control app, and a version of chain reaction) with support developer info, and the best developement suite i've ever used. Not to mention cost only £15 on a great £20 a month contract.

Or, you could buy that. Battery non-removeable locked down hardware. I know that people who aren't developers, or 'educated gadget freaks' will choose it, rather than be holding back tears of joy for apps such as CellTrack or WifiFoFum. But this is not a good phone it fails its modus operandi, and shows the power of suggestion and a good add campaign.

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

Also another happy windows smartphone customer here.

The whole apple business plan (as mentioned previously in this post) of dominating by controlling everything sucks! Agreed a Mac desktop is more stable than a windows one just the same as an iphone will probs be more stable than a windows phone.... hold on a minute what about the ipod.... i think that every person i have met who has owned an ipod (who actually takes it out of their home) has suffered from its complete failure of some form or another wheras i have met tonnes of people with creative mp3 player who have owned them for years upon years. Yes ok so i have met people whos creatives have failed aswell. My point is that Apple are not this amazing 'everything will work if u stick with us' company that they make themselfes out to be. The I-Phone, just the same as the I-Pod, is overrated and for less money you can get something that will have just as much if not more versitility without HAVING to own every apple product they sell.

IMO out of all of apples products, the only one i would buy would be a power mac. The only reason i would do that is because i do media and they are the undesputed king of video/photo editing and music production. Unfortunately i dont have a few grand to chuck into one so im stuck on windows... oh well i enjoy playing games and everything costs me a LOT less, il get over it

But they are subsidising the handset, only the subsidy is going to Apple. I don't why people don't understand this. Apple wants to prevent iPhone unlocking because it means they lose money from the contracts.
I find your attitude to my hypothetical question a little miss placed...

How would, freeing yourself from a O2 shackel be "DAFT", You can get pay monthly contacts on a sim only basis with extremely good deals, replacing the standard 02 200mins/200 txt with a more attractive deals seems a smart choice to me... maybe its your blind ingnorance that doesnt see this.

I made this comment hypothetically taking about a UK based iPhone when i comes out... I thought this was clear as i was taking about a 02 handset not an AT&T handset.

How exactly is £269 subsidised(When was the last time "YOU" paid that much for a phone on a 18 month contract with such a bad package deal... cant you see how much 02 are making from the deal) , when for the same price you can buy a Ipod touch with almost the same capability (hence minus the crap phone and camera) ...??? Subisidised>>???? When you can get a far superior Nokia N95 (£396 sim free) for completely free on most highstreets? Answer me this?

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

I'd add my voice to the happy chorus of WM smartphone users; we have the Vario II and Treo 750 in service here and so far they've been flawless. I was looking at the Nokia E61i, and it's a lovely device, but the Exchange client is a bit carp...

By comparison, the iPhone is underspecified, locked in, inflexible, and (counting the utterly crap packages) RUINOUSLY expensive. I'd also note that what's going on isn't "Oh, our firmware accidentally bricks unlocked phones", Apple is deliberately damaging computer systems whose owners have done nothing other than what they are explicitly allowed by law both here and in the US to do, that is to say unlock their handset - and it's fairly obvious that they're also perfectly happy to allow some significant collateral damage in their quest to punish customers who've done nothing unlawful (hence their wiping/bricking handsets which HAVEN'T been unlocked). Their conduct is NOT defensible; it may well be unlawful.

Personally, I hope that they take a beating over this and continue to do so for some time.

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

Another thing to note, there not *that* stable, just had an email from a mate who's bought one (he does have more money than sense... and he dosen't have that much money) its locked up. How do you reset something you can't take the battery out of? Poor sod had to get up early for work, its not a nice shock to have at 4am.

It should be noted that apple should be able to make this FAR more stable than my WM smartphone, the OS is customised for that one peice of hardware only. This is also why apple desktops will inevitably crash less (thou i've found when your using ubscure hardware, like an ICD, on some pillark who refuses to own a cheap-o pc to use when playing electrical engineering degree student, it locks up fantastically, but thats due to BSDs absilmal excuse of a USB abstraction layer (yes the HAL in windows i love so much.))

Just thought it was worthy to note, these aren't that stable. In fairness thou, i have to point out, i'd love to be able to make my WM6 phone rotate the screen as quickly as the iphone can, alas i fear that would take a fair bit of re-coding.

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

Unfortunately Apple, like Sony is getting too greedy.
I think both companies are missing a very good point, the point is that since the bad old days where firms like Apple, Sony et al were one of the only ones in their field, it is now no longer true, the consumer can get exactly what they want from most any other companies, including no name brands such as HTC, why pay stupid prices just to download music, or buy a memory card, just because some overbearing idiot of a company decides to make everything proprietary.
As for the extortionate price of this phone, don’t worry about it, Apple have had to drop the price of it in the States to get it to sell, they will probably do the same here, just wait and see!

Yep, if Apple keeps treating their own customers as though they are zombies, history will repeat itself and Apple will start making losses again...just like what happened with Sony...

    I bring you an alternative:

    http://www.openmoko.org/

    Open source Linux smartphone
    640x480 High res touch screen
    Built in GPS
    Accelarated graphics
    Accelelarometers
    Replacable flash memory

    But:
Not avalable yet (unless you fancy getting down & dirty with the software development)
GSM and GPRS only. No 3G

Re: Apple: we're going to kill your unlocked iPhone!

Currently it is not suitable for users. The state of the software at the moment is pre-alpha. If you order a Neo1973, DO NOT expect to be able to use it as an everyday phone until October 2007 at the soonest
this is my problem with just about all linux phones (at least, the proper open ones) i want something to use with thousands of apps out there to manage my life and play games on. not something that will work sometimes that is a technical toy to hack around with
