I don't think piracy is the sole reason for issues like this, but it certainly doesn't help matters when you find a game you've spent years developing available on download sites within hours of release.

Whilst PC gaming is unlikely to die, we'll see fewer and fewer PC releases over time.

I agree with you on the Piracy front. I don't agree with the fewer PC releases. What will happen is that fewer developers will concentrate on PC only releases, knowing full well that console releases are where the moneys at. Look at Halo3 & GTAIV, $300m & $400m (and the rest) turnover for a single game. PC's just don't get that sort of money, and with the current cost of development going through the roof, they need better returns.

What hasn't helped Crytek much is that to get the best out of the game you need a stupidly powerful PC to play it on. With the current problems with the credit crunch, people won't be willing to shell out £300+ on a GFX card. What Crytek should have done is made the engine more scaleable to lower systems. HL2 managed it, so why can't the current crop of games? To blame everything on Piracy is just a way out, imho.

Re: Headlines - No more PC exclusives for Crysis dev

Ill admit to pirating Crysis, but I wouldnt have bought it any ways, the specs were far to high and the gameplay was dull and the story was generic and to be honest the graphics werent great, i had a top end PC with an 8800GTX at release and still couldnt play on high settings.

Piracy has always been a problem on the PC, and will always be. But its just as ripe on consoles, the NDS being a prime example with, according to Nintendo, or 3/4 of NDS owners using an R4 Revolution or similar, Im one of them because the games are crap and not worth £25-£30. Also the M33/Dark Alex Firmwares for the PSP, the Wii Key, the Infectus or the firmware mod for the 360. The only console not effected by piracy is the PS3 and thats only a matter of time.

The only reason that PC piracy is seen as such a problem is that the pirates use their PC to download and play so any PC gamer is a potential pirate as he has the equipment no modification required.

    Just my thoughts anyway.

if you couldnt play crysis on high with an 8800GTX something is wrong xD, i play crysis on high @ 1680x1050, performs well at ~35fps.

Oh dear lord, how often do I have to repeat myself on this?

We will absolutely not tolerate piracy.

That just bought you a ban.

Regardless of whether you think the games are any good or not, you're still happy to play them, just not pay for them. Sure, if a game is crap, don't buy it or wait until it hits the bargain bin.

I wonder if people who have the same attitude as scarbunny would consider going into Game, HMV, ASDA or wherever and shoplifting a game from the shelves? Seems to me there's no difference in digitally stealing or physically stealing... you're still not paying for the game. There's just less risk in downloading it.

Besides obviously needing bugger all brain cells to do it and then talk about it with clearly no remorse or shame, the reason that PC piracy is a problem is because idiots like you do it and try to justify your actions with half-arsed reasons such as 'games being to expensive' or 'they're all crap anyway'.

Anyhoo, ban imposed. Not that it'll change your crappy attitude but at least you're not my problem anymore.

1600x1200 for me ran very well in the main. Even managed to turn on some of the DX10 features too.

yea but whats the difference between now and say 5-6 years ago? you could still pirate pc games back then when the likes of ut 2k4, hl 1 and 2 etc came out and was pc exclusive so what makes things different now?

fact of the matter it was easier to pirate games back then. no need to join cracked specific servers to play ut2k4, you could download that and play it has if its a proper retail and no need to have a no dvd patch etc..

whats lacking is pc exclsuives. those games mentioned where pc exclusives and like someone else said diddnt require a pc costing 2k to play them either. games like AOC, WAR and sims3 will sell a healthy amount and why? because by the sounds of it you dont need a 9800gx2 SLI card to play it AND its pc exclusive(well AOC on the 360 coming maybe 4-5months after).

Also cod4 sell pretty well on the pc too because its realy an online game and to play it you need a legit copy. IMO if gta4 was released first on a pc and then on consoles in say 2-3months, that would of helped pc gaming a hell of alot as i could see gta4 selling close to maybe $200m as apposed to 400 that was predicted for the consoles.

Top job. What a plonker. As I get older, I realise more and more how much piracy annoys me. In fact, with Crysis it's doubly annoying, because clearly you need a very expensive PC to play it in the first place, so it's not like people can really claim they are short of money as a lame excuse.

Piracy is nothing new. It was rife back in the days of the Sinclair Spectrum.

I agree with the comments about Crysis though. I haven't bought it (and certainly not pirated it) as my A64 3500 is unlikely to be able to run it at any reasonable resolution. The developers really have no right to complain about the number of sales in the PC market when they deliberately set the bar so high that only a fraction of people can clear it.

The biggest difference is that 5-6 years ago it was easier and cheaper to develop PC games than console games. You had to specifically develop a game for consoles, using specialist kit and spend a lot of time converting things so that they'll run on the limited hardware.

Now a days, it's creating things for the PC that tends to be harder, as Sony and Microsoft have invested a fortune in their development kits, developers get a lot of support from both console manufacturers because they realise that their console brands live and die by the quality of games. Unfortunately for PC gamers, the support comes with a catch, they want you to sell enough units to justify the cost.

Re: Headlines - No more PC exclusives for Crysis dev

ahh i see true but aint the 360 sdk tool similar for pc platforms? i thought its piss easy to port from 360 to pc's? and i also heard that the ps3 sdk is a nightmarw and not has easy as you just pointed out. gta4 was delayed because of that sad fact and recently the creator of the MGS series pretty much nailed it and said it was a nightmare working with the PS3.

edit: why cant a developer do this. half the team of developers concentrate on the console version of a game and then the otehr half do the pc version of the game using todays technology more efficient instead of doing the console version first and using the same code tweeked abit for the pc version ie porting
