went to dell webby to check and yup.. a High resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920x1200).. any reason they are not making a desktop screen at that size and res?

not all of us who would like full HD have large desks or spaces to put the 24" 1920x1200 screens on/in..

a 17" is around the size that fit's nicely.. 19" or 20" will fit at a squeeze where i currently have PC..

Dunno cheapest I could see was over £400, but when I checked this morning it was nearly £600. They've been making changes throughout the day.

They really need to start putting some decent GPUs into the new (or even high end existing) line of laptops. There is little excuse for not putting them in, as we are talking 15" / 17" laptops here, which have sufficient room.
Many people want to just own laptops, and not have to own a desktop as well to play most games reasonably well.

Re: Headlines - Dell launches Studio range of laptops

You'd struggle to get decent GPUs in them. Have you seen the size of the decent discreet cards? Even the mid-range cards (HD4850) use a fair bit of power, and emit a hell of a lot of heat (for a laptop). While it's possible, what you end up with is a thin desktop PC (like the LC08) with a monitor attached and it's just not worth it for most companies to produce it - it's too niche a market.

Even the 8800m GTX that came out wasn't a patch on the desktop version, and it was big enough as it was.

I wish I'd waited on this to be honest. I ordered an XPS M1530 3 weeks ago after giving up on these, then a week later, tada, essentially an XPS with an ATi graphics solution. Now I have to put up with NVIDIA's mobile drivers. Grr.

Yep, but they have putten in sub par GPUs in there, when better ones are available, that do fit into 15" form factor easily (some other brands have them already). Not asking for the earth (the ones you mention are very high end).

Well they've got HD3650s and 8600m GTs in them, which is more than adequate in most cases. As said, there's an 8800m GTX too, but it's not for your standard size 15". It's a desktop replacement part.

Shame the Blu Ray drives are still so blooming expensive on lappies! £150 on the Studio 15, and it's not even an option on the Studio 17 (eh? what's the point of that big screen then?!)

Actually the 15" is only coming with the HD 3450, and that is not an good performer at all. It is on par with or worse than a 8400M. Hence why I think it is not ok.

We weren't talking about these particular laptops though, we were just talking hypothetically.
