The last time I checked you were allowed to maintain reasonable backups of any retail purchased media as long as you still own the original and don't make it available to broadcast outside your own home.

Just remember to delete it from the media server if you trade anything in or stick it on e-bay and you should still be legal.

This is completely untrue. There is a provision for backing up software, but this does not include DVD or any other digital media. To do this, 99% of the time you would also be circumventing copy protection or DRM, this is also illegal.

And you can get them for as low at £3 on the highstreet from the likes of HMV in a sale!

Yes I know this gang were selling new release films for £3, not bargain bucket stuff, so it isn't exactly a direct comparison. Retail DVDs are still a hell of a lot cheaper than they were when I first started buying them. 2-for-£30 at the time was a bargain, now I won't even pay that for BluRay titles. I will also pay more for a CD than I will for a DVD/BluRay because I know I'll get more enjoyment out of it.

Amazes me how everything always turns to race. I remember not too long ago a family of true brits getting done for the same thing. Did people bring out the race card then? No they bought out the no hope bunch of Chav's card that time.

My response to that is <Please read the rules on swearing - Admin>.

I bought it. I have the media. If i wanna drop it on my server so i can watch it in bedroom, lounge or even the damn shower... I will. Keep restricting me? Fine i drop you from my buy list. Plenty of other films/music out there.

Its MY damn PC. Not yours. You are not "Renting" me your content. Piss the hell off.

And a LOT of people agree with you, including me. If I've bought (or been given, or otherwise legitimately acquired) a CD, and want to put it on my MP3 player because I don't want to lug a collection of discs around with me, then I'm going to and don't much care if it's technically illegal.

However, it's worth bearing in mind that despite it being technically illegal, unless you bypass copy protection, then that kind of illegal copying is merely a civil matter which might get you sued if the copyright holder knew you'd done it, and cared enough to take legal action. But exactly that issue has been technically illegal at least since the '60s when tape reorders and then cassette decks started appearing in homes, and people started recording their LPs to cassette or 8-track to use in the car, etc. So far as I'm aware, nobody has ever actually faced legal action over it. So while the copyright holder might have that legal option, I'm not aware of any actually exercising it in those circumstances.

Oh, and it's illegal in this country, but not in many others. A common way round it is to include a small levy in every piece of blank media you buy, be it CDR, cassette tape, whatever. Personally, I object to that, because I use a lot of CDRs for purposes that have nothing whatever to do with illicit copying of copyright protected material, and also for making legitimate backups of computer software.

There was a proposal to amend the copyright law in the UK to add "format-shifting" for personal use to the list of fair use exceptions to the Copyright Act, to mirror the time-shifting exemptions. My opinion is that exactly that is likely to happen next time the CDPA gets a major update, though government seems to be in no hurry to tackle it and I doubt it'll be before the next election, and probably some considerable time after that.

Meantime, millions of people will go on ignoring that outdated bit of law, and feeling quite comfortable doing it.,

Re: News - Men behind Britain's biggest DVD piracy scam jailed for six years

I'll admit that most copy protection just annoys me. If I buy something and it's got some DRM on it, I'll usually end up exploiting the analogue hole to get a nice rip of it which I can play on whatever I own whenever I want. I try not to download music illegally, but modern digital music services to me are just an evolution of what I used to do, tape from the radio and then use a twin-deck to get rid of the adverts/talking on mixtapes I made. The tools of the trade have changed now though, instead of cassettes it's H340s and FLAC/HQMP3...

I own a massive amount of completely legal music, DVDs and Games, so if I occasionally get a track or two for free I don't see it as a massive problem, If I like the artist I usually buy the CD eventually anyway.

I agree with you as well.

I was just correcting the misapprehension many people have that you are allowed a personal backup copy

These men were living the dream: claiming benifit and earning millions... everyone get off your high horse because you are all criminals, in the past I'm sure you have broken one law or two. These men carried it out on a larger scale. They were ditributing pron... thats great!!

Re: News - Men behind Britain's biggest DVD piracy scam jailed for six years

i think people who are idiots/scammers/lazy/want quick money, etc.. exists everywhere regardless of country, religion, race, etc. Important thing is how it is portrayed in the media and what people choose to believe.

Cases like these are good example of illegal copyright abuse in my opinion. I think that if the RIAA/MPAA and whatever the hell other AAs spent more effort to eradicate these types of syndicates/operations then fine. but what i cant stand is when they blame it solely on illegal file sharing to account for the lost in PREDICTED market share.

personally i prefer to watch movies at the cinema and while i was in the uk i had the cineworld unlimited card and i go quite regularly. as with some of you what i hate is when they play those stupid piracy adverts. If i am watching a movie in the cinema then of course i am not pirating. If you want to target the people who actually tape the movie in the cinema then that quick note with the caution is more than enuff. i hate piracy ads on dvds or cinema or cds. i dont think they help. if you wanna steal then you will do it anyway so no amount of ad will make people want to pay crazy prices like £30 or £40. i normally wait till they drop so low like £5 or £10 then i'll go get them so if big companies cant make money from me then too darn bad just dont blame it solely on file sharing there are lots of competition out there (different consoles, medias, genres,....) much more than in the past!
