According to the study most of us gamers are older,depressed and overweight!! Perhaps it is the cost of the continual hardware upgrades!!
The study is only in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington state so TBH, it is only really applicable to parts of the US but not the entire world. Independent studies need to be done in many countries before any clear conclusions can be drawn about the average age of gamers worldwide.
A couple of independent sources is always useful, otherwise it is like believing everything a government says without thinking about it first.

That's not a proof. It's good PR, but you can't say for sure that it's a more profitable option. The two bands you mentioned were already well established before they started doing this - in contrast how many more internet-oriented independent artists do you think are still unknown to Joe public?
