Good to see you've updated the mechanical drive to something a bit faster than that 750gb unit you used previously

We fully expect to see almost all high-performance 64GB SSDs costing <£100 within a month or two.
Oh how I wish! A 120gb SSD for £150 will hit the sweet spot for me.

Why is Windows 7 RC being used on the test system?
The RTM version has now been available for 20 days now and is far more relevant than the RC.

For me SSDs will become really attractive when they hit the £1 per GB mark. I guess I'll have to wait until next year...

That is assuming the testers have a Technet, MSDN or something like that. It isn't in retail yet.

But yeah, I would have assumed Hexus would have a Technet account, after all they are testing Windows on systems.

Re: First looks - Crucial 64GB performance solid-state drive. First look

The drive is available for £114.99, including delivery.
Or £106.94 if you shop through Quidco

I'd actually be tempted to get a couple of 64GB drives and use them in RAID-0 for my boot drive in my desktop and my server.

What's with those crazy prices? I've seen the 256GB in stock for £342 and the 64GB for £98....
I think that was Novatech (memory may be fuzzy on that one) but yeah, those are definitely inflated prices. Overclockers had them cheaper too.

    Nice review.
The real life performance tests shed some light on the value of the crucial SSD.

I must say £115 for 64GB sounds rather good. Personally, I want better performance, though.

Novatech is now £115 for the 64GB, and still no stock, plus delivery on top.

Their Quidco is only 3% too

    Hi,

It's possible to get drives cheaper on today-only or special-offer deals. Our prices highlight how much you would expect to pay for an in-stock item.

Company A might drop the price of a drive for two days just to gain exposure. We don't feel that it's a good method for evaluating value for money.

Just to say thanks for looking at the 64gb drive. I've really been getting the upgrade bug on SSD's, but looking at the actual drop in performance on the lower spec drive has made me think twice.

Anyway, knowledge is always good, so thanks.

Come on Hexus, put a couple of these drives (ideally) or any SSD's in RAID 0 for the roundup article

A whole bunch of drives, some in RAID0, will be in the round-up, under W7 RTM. We're just waiting on some new firmwares.

Re: First looks - Crucial 64GB performance solid-state drive. First look

Good preview but i have to ask, why not a corsair 64gb SSD? These figures do make the crucial drive seem poor(ish) but it is being compared to something that cost almost 3times more!. Surely it would be more benefitial to compare it to drives that are in the same market, right? How about the following:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...MPP-0VA00.html (cheaper than Crucial so it should lose)
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...2-1SLD60G.html
    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...air/CSR-SSD128.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/64GB-...s-Write-70MB-s
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/64GB-...135MB-s-Retail

Now these should make a better comparison, some are cheaper and some are more expensive but they are similar in size and their target market.
